If someone mentioned, "little white church", what image would pop into your mind? I'd bet I know.

The Milner Chapel, built in 1886, resides in Langely, British Columba, Canada.
It's a town rich in history and is the perfect home for this little white church.
The story of how it came to be is precious!
According to the website I found:
"When local farmer, Henry Davis, asked for his bride’s hand in marriage, his future father- in- law said that there had to be a place of worship for his daughter to attend if she was to become Mrs. Henry Davis.
So, Henry Davis saddled up his horse and over the course of time, riding from Mt Lehman to Delta, collected enough money to proceed with the construction of a new church at Milner."

And the grounds are just as beautiful.
The curvy lines of the walkways that grace the property appear to hug the lushness of the shrubs and trees.
Rich historic woodsy doors and original hardware appear to be restored to perfection.
How romantic... I wonder if my future true love will build me a church...
Maybe I'll just hold out for the lake front cabin. That works too. :)

ReplyDeleteI just posted on FB two OLD churches I took pictures of this past weekend in the flinthills of kansas. Made with local stone, the sun was setting... It was just perfect. I love old architecture too.

ReplyDeleteOh, I LOVED looking at that chapel and daydreaming a bit about it every time I would drive by, back in my Langley living days. Sooo beautiful. Looks like they've fixed it up a lot! What a romantic story too...I had never heard this history before. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI was married in a little country church in 1971 on Bowen Island, B.C. They call it now "The Little Red Church"....holds many childhood memories for me. The grounds and the church itself in Milner are beautifully maintained.
ReplyDeleteMy fraternal grandfather bought a plot of land in Milner in the 40's and built a small 3 room cabin intending he and my grandmother to relocate there from their home in Vancouver. Unfortunately my grandmother (whom I never met as she died 3 months after my birth) refused to budge and never lived there. It was very ermmm 'rustic' so I can't really blame my grandmother. Grandpa lived there for many years on his own until too frail and went into a nursing home. I guess he didn't build the perfect little cabin in the country for his wife...Fail! lol
I am sure the area of Milner where he lived will have changed beyond recognition now; the last time I saw it was in the late 50's.
As soon as I saw the pix of the little white church, the song Take Me Down to the Little White Church came to mind. You should have played it for us.

ReplyDeleteThat is a nifty church. There's one near my house that looks sorta like Milner minus the beautiful landscaping. Funny you should mention churches I want to start takin pictures of churches. They fascinate me with all the different kinds.
