Blogging: easy or effort?

 "This is difficult!"

Blogging. It's alot of work, isn't it?

I've read a few posts lately that have some bloggers either taking a hiatus or have quit. It makes me wonder what I'd do with myself if my computer was taken away from me, enforcing me to quit. Quite simply, because I never would on my own. :)

This isn't to say I don't desire a break from time to time. Sometimes there's just too much going on in the real world and I'm overwhelmed trying to keep up with it all. But know what happens the moment there's a lull? You got it... taptaptap. :)

Ever have thoughts of throwing in the towel for any of these reasons?

1. "I don't post very often anyway."

Ever walk into a store with bare shelves?

If you're posting little these days, the outcome is similar. You reap what you sow. Offer relevant content on a consistent basis with good photos, interesting projects, be seen, post often, and you'll see a difference in your traffic.

2. "I just can't be bothered to put in the time."

Blogging takes a ton of time. However if you feel like it takes too much time, perhaps address what you're blogging about. Maybe you haven't hit your own passionate niche yet. Because trust me, when you figure it out, you can't stop chatting about it!

LOVE what you blog about and you'll forget about the time it takes. Your biggest problem will be about breaking away from it. :) See #3.

3. It's all too much! I'm not taking care of life!

If you blog about your passion, time truly does stand still. However there's danger in that too. I have to have a chit chat with myself all the time. "Quit browsing, take care of life, then come back." All the time. Creative friends, you make this hard. :)

Solution? Try setting limitations on blogging such as an hour at a time. Use a timer if you need to.

Tips on juggling with blogging time is HERE.

4. "I'm not making money."

While it's nice to make an income, if that's your sole reason for blogging from the get go, I suggest to pick another hobby. You won't make money right away with a small blog unless you are blogging to promote your business. Concentrate on picking a passion to write about, work on growing your blog, then the rest will follow.

Realize, the most successful bloggers have flipped their blog into their life's work, as opposed those that incorporate blogging into their off topic full time working world.  But there ARE things you can do if you fall into the latter group.

a) Offer something to sell. Whether it be sidebar sponsor space, or selling something, you have to offer something to make a monetary return. Just know, whatever route you choose, it flips into a job. Those with loads of sponsors work hard to advertise for them, and in many cases, work to get them. Those selling things are working long hours making things to sell. Those selling ebooks spend many hours writing offline. Anything you do will take some effort.

b) Join up with an ad campaign.   Some campaigns pay by pageloads, some via clicks on the ads, some both. For me, BlogHer was a wonderful move. Google ads also brings in some monthly income. And there are others out there. Try googling the topic and see what you find.

c) Charge for reviews and giveaways.  Holding a giveaway is promoting someone's business and you CAN charge for the privilege. Trading for product is fine and dandy, but I vote to only trade if you need the stuff. This was about bringing in revenue, remember?

You CAN be paid for your online time. Work on growing your blog first, then jump in!

6. "The competition is difficult to watch and makes me feel inferior."

I remember one blog post in particular. A blogger did a killer before and after that made my jaw drop. And her numbers rose overnight from that one post. What stood out the most is, I couldn't wipe the incredible before and after out of my mind and it highly encouraged me to follow the same path. So, I quit worrying about what others were doing from that day forward and started hacking away on my own potential success.

STOP the comparisons. Go do YOUR best work, then show us. No one does it quite like you, so work on setting up your own stage. Be inspired by what others are offering, then show your visitors what YOU can do.

7." I can't handle watching all that success going on.  I'll NEVER get there."

I'll admit I feel this from time to time. But then I quickly remind myself, whatever success someone else just received has been earned. Then I roll up my sleeves and work a little harder. :)

Watch those successful around you, then try what they have in your own way. They are paving a new way for you. Be gracious, thank them, support them, then go do it yourself! Stomp out the CAN'T attitude and go for it!

8. "I can't get my blog to grow so what's the point?"

How you create your posts can be VERY relevant to your blog's growth. Good pics? Relevant content? Are you teaching something?

Don't worry about big follower numbers or rankings from the getgo. Build up your best content possible, so when others do come your way, they're be enticed to stay. Generally you need to convince a blogger to follow you with more than one good post. Put your best work out there and you've got them!

Post your best work. Post often. Take great pics. Join link parties. Comment lots. You'll be noticed.

And you can also try starting your own link party. However, I do suggest waiting until you have a decent size following, otherwise you just won't get the traffic or return visits. I think I started when I was around 1000 followers.

Visitors are shopping. How are you stocking your store shelves?

You can read tips on how to create blog growing posts HERE.

9. "I don't have enough to say. I keep running out of content."

Perhaps address what it is you're blogging about. If it's home decor and your house is done, and you don't like to change things up, you may have a glitch ahead of you. Think about how you can expand on so you do have content to share, such as creating and selling what you make. Or writing about what you know in order to teach. There are always forks in any given road.

Tips on breaking through writer's block is HERE.

10. I'm not into my niche topic any longer.

That's ok too! Seasons change. Allow your new passions to come forward and see where they take you.

Have more than one passion?  I'm a decorator but I love writing about loads of stuff, from blog tips, photography, lifestyle, inspiration... you've seen it all here. Blog what you love to write about and you will build an audience for it.

"Lah lah lah... new attitude... this is great!

Friends, only you know why you blog. It's my guess that for most of you, this is simply your way of expressing your passion. And if you're loving it, keep at it. Exposure indeed does bring in opportunity. Enjoy the ride and see ya online!

  1. LOVE this post Donna! You hit on everything. I in fact have my coffee talk series tomorrow, and I will discuss expectations..
I loved #6, that really hits home, because it is exactly the way I feel when I do something...I put my best foot forward and have fun, and make it my own. I enjoyed this post...thanks for all you do:)

  2. It's a loop for me. I've grown an addiction to blogging. When I need content so I re-decorate (which I adore!). And when I decorate, I need to blog about it.

When I blog about life with the boys, well that's just easy for me. But I do wonder how many people do really care. Is that content keeping readers away? I never really addressed it because I'm never going to change that aspect of it. Chronicling their everyday lives is the reason I started blogging in the first place.

  3. Fantastic post. If I compared myself to others, I may not post either. I blog for me. If other people read it, great. If not...their loss. Ha! I kid. One thing I've noticed is a lot of people follow a blog only with hopes that the other person will follow back. I say, only follow a blog you really enjoy. I know for me, I'd rather have quality followers who enjoy what I write, not just quantity. To each his own.

Thanks for the great info. You certainly know your niche! ;)

  4. Great post. You are so darn helpful. I have thought of quitting before, but it's from real life rearing it's head. If I'm off for more than a few days I start to get withdrawl symptons.

You are so right about #6. I can get so caught up in other people's blogs and what they are doing that I have to remember to get back to mine. Like right now I'm supposed to be finishing a post and I'm chit chatting on here!

  5. Love the post -- really love it! No thoughts of quitting. I have been at this a little over a year and am just now seeing any reward. So I agree, if you start out wanting the reward -- get another hobby! :)
I have just reached over 1,000 followers. But really does the blog world NEED another linky party??? I struggle with that. I just don't want to be one of the masses holding a weekly linky party about the same old thing. So I just keep posting and joining others linky parties. Makes me happy for now anyway! :)

  6. I'm still a mere infant in the blogging world. I started my blog as a place to store pictures about my home decor/improvement projects so that if I wanted to share something in a link party or on a blog like Better After, I could do it without sending people to my family blog. I still only have a handful of followers, but like you said, I just keep posting what I'm interested in and I'm thrilled to have ANY followers. It's flattering to have any audience at all. And I love being a small part of the blogging community. There is SOOOO much great inspiration out there!

  7. #5 Angie, I suggest to create a link party that SEPARATES you from the rest. Do something unique! ie: SNS is unique in the fact that I have 3 topics with one revolving.

#3, Gail, I so agree. I only follow if I'm sold, not because I feel I have to.

#2 Yanet, we all blog for diff reasons. Define why YOU are blogging and you'll have your answer. If you wish to be in magazines, show THAT. If you enjoy the lifestyle format, go for it! You'll build an audience for your own loves.

  12. Your post is EXACTLY why I have set a limit for myself - I only post three times a week {otherwise I'd go crazy}, have a schedule with a topic, and following it is so much easier for me. I feel like I have a purpose and can stay on or around that topic for that day much more easily. I have SO many ideas that my "draft" file is bursting and many more that keep coming in! I don't do any advertising because I never want my blog to feel like a job - it's so fun for me, a hobby! I try never to be concerned with numbers and stats - even though it's fun to see! Thanks for your honesty!

  13. Great post, Donna. It's so funny, because I blog simply and only because I love to. I've blogged for years and years, and blogs pop up, get massively popular in less than a year, and I go, WHAT??

No point in comparing. I like what I do. And actually, the very very few numbers I blog to keep it more real and less pressure for me.

  14. Love the post.
I am a brand spankin' new blogger! I have been lurking around on these posts for awhile now. Thinking I have done that!

So, I am still in the honeymoon period & having a blast just learning about how it all works! Linking to your blog Saturday was my first time! hee hee I even figured out how to make a button for myself. ;)

It doesn't feel like work to me. It is still just so much fun to see that I actually got it up and running!

  15. Donna-What great tips. I, for one, blog for the purpose of recording my grandkids' history so that can look back someday and realize how much they were loved by a wacky Nana. When I am pressed for time I throw in my "out-there" Magazine ad mockeries...which is a bit of my off-the-wall humor. It's funny because my blog is a small one but I get several comments from people just about every day...and I LOVE my followers and know just about every one of them in some manner. GREAT post, Donna. xxDiana

  17. thank you so much for the wonderful post! I really do love blogging, I find myself when I am out or taking a picture thinking to myself " hmm, this would be a nice post on the blog" LOL I think I might be addicted. It has been a slow growing blog for me but, that is okay I didn't start so I can win lots of followers, I started because I needed a creative outlet! Cheers today to you and this wonderful post, I loved it!

Just this weekend The Boyfriend and I were talking that if I didn't have all this chippy, junkin, re-do stuff I would go crazy! I love keeping busy, I love decorating other homes -- this is my thang!!!

  22. Such a helpful, encouraging post. I really needed it! Everything you said was just so...adequate. I LOVE blogging. LOVE LOVE LOVE it, but I do want to try to make some income to help my husband, feel like I contribute, have an outlet. But then, I also feel that if I didn't have any followers at all, just my friends and family, I'd still want to blog. It makes it even better that total strangers become friends and WANT to read what we write. Blogging still boggles my mind!!!
Thank you. I love your blog. All around helpful!!! You are an amazing person!!

  28. Fantastic post! I think for me it is just a motivation issue....I can think of at least 10 other things I would rather do than put up a blog post. My last post was on Feb 4th. Since then I have done a couple of projects, took pictures, and that's about it. I love looking, reading, and learning from blogland, but I am just not sure if I have enough passion to be a "blogger". We'll see - I guess time will tell.
    Thanks again!

  29. Loved this post, something similar has been rattling around in my head and you voiced it so well. I jumped in the blogging world a couple months ago to share my world of painting, sewing and gardening, oh, and my chickens too. As you can see I have no niche but I love what I do and sharing it. The big plus, is finding all the great low cost decorating ideas and tips that inspire. Love it! Blogging has certainly increased the traffic to my website, which is a big plus. Now, to get off this computer and go paint. Ta!

  33. It's very hard for me to post and I still feel so clueless, but I have to keep in mind in just a hobby for me and I can hopefully inspire someone along the way. I still have little ones running around so that's my priority. I'm thankful for bloggers like you though who take it serious and continually offer interesting content. You have replaced my "magazines" and encourage me to keep posting 'when I can"!

  34. Hi Donna! First of all, I've been lacking in the social graces department because I've never properly thanked you for sending me the fabulous picket tops I received in your giveaway this past winter. They are truly delightful, and right now they are being used as "props" to help show off a couple of bird figurines that I have. I will do something a little more clever with them eventually... for now, they bring a smile every time I see them and I'm thrilled - so thank you!

Second, I've been blogging in one spot or another since 2002 and have to say I heartily agree with everything you've said above. But the best advice is your Number 6, regarding the inferiority complex. That's probably the biggest lesson I've learned, whether blogging about politics or motorcycles or home decor... just BE YOURSELF - every voice is authentic, and every blogger has just as much 'right' to show off their stuff as the next one. So don't let envy get in the way of showing off what YOU can do!

    Great advice all around!

    Janet

  36. Another great post Donna!! I remember when I got the audition call from HGTV for a potential show after only a couple of months of blogging under my belt. You left me a funny message about me doing something right and how you were gonna have to try harder...and look at you now, I was left on the cutting room floor and you have a book deal! Hmphh!
Seriously though, it did feel like I was validated for doing something I loved to do, and that alone is the reason we should all be blogging~cuz we love it.

  37. Great post! I think everyone doubts themselves at one time or another. I started blogging for reasons that I've explained before and resisted posting ads for the first several months, because I didn't want it to feel like a J. O. B. When I did sign up for adSense, I just tried to remember that it didn't matter if I never made a penny, because writing this blog is a creative outlet that I enjoy and getting paid would just be a happy bonus.

Thanks for looking out for the rest of us and posting these tips.

  40. You always have great advice for putting things into perspective! I'm still fairly new at this and trying to figure out just what I really want out of it and how I fit in. 41. Love this post! I wouldn't dream of going on a blogging hiatus but I do dream of going on a life hiatus so that I can blog more.....this has become an expensive endeavor for me too. I just purchased a DSLR camera because I wasn't happy with the results I was getting from my point and shoot and I don't even want to think about how much I am spending on supplies for my crafts. Trying to find the time to do this right is the hardest part and every week I fail.....

  42. This was so well timed for me.
I'm constantly re-assessing the process. First I had a cooking blog - hence the name - Cooking At Cafe D.

Now, I'm married with step-kids. So, it's grown to more of a lifestyle blog.

Then we started our Etsy shop. First we just wanted to pass along the vintage treasures we had accumulated over the years. (We are merging our homes, afterall.)

Now it seems the rustic vase and bowl fillers we are selling are getting more of a "looksee" than our vintage wares. So, time to think about that.

Most of all, we're not sure our name fits us anymore. :)

It's great to hear that BlogHer has been a good choice for you. I've been pondering applying with them.

    Thank you for your insight!
Excellent post with lots to think about.

LOL I am very grateful for the followers I have! I do comment on others blogs regularly and participate in linky parties. But often feel like I am talking to myself on mine! 53. Well, I enjoy your posts and you hit the nail on the head. Write about what you love and it comes easy. I started blogging just so I could secure blogging jobs as a writer, however, I soon found out that I enjoyed creating artwork and blogging about it. Blogging actually changed my life direction! I so enjoy what I do and now could care less about other blogging jobs. (I mean I won’t pass up an opportunity if it comes knocking, but…)It never really matters who is following me or how many are following me because I have made some great friendships along the way and I like what I write about. I don’t post every day, but sometimes I have so much to say that I do! Anyway, this is just a comment, so maybe I should just stop.

  54. Yes thank you for sharing this. I actually lost some sleep last night over these very same issues and created an entire post about if some of this is worth it or not. (Maybe not the smartest thing to do! - oops) But it IS discouraging for newbies to try and jump into this craziness. There are so many great blogs out there and it makes me wonder how I can keep up. I'll be honest, I did start my blog in the hopes that I could take it somewhere and make some money while I'm staying home and raising my son. I figured I'm remodeling my house and doing all sorts of projects anyway so why not just showcase it and get a paycheck for it.... well not quite so easy. But I appreciate the good advice to keep going and stay focused on myself rather than comparing myself to everyone else. It's worth a shot! Thanks again!

  55. I no longer put pressure on myself to blog everyday or even several times a week. At first, I felt like I had to do that. This is a fun outlet for me and I want to keep it that way so I post a couple of times per week on average; sometimes 3, sometimes 1. Occasionally, life gets really busy and I do need to take a week but if you post about doing that, everyone is really supportive. I've thought about doing a linky party because I thought it would be fun but I can't figure out what kind to do and I don't want it to become a chore so maybe in the future. This was a great post. Thanks for sharing it.

  67. I've always wanted to chronicle the before/after shots of our items. It just seemed like a no-brainer way and to get shop exposure. I do have to remind myself the true reason why I started this and not get too focused on the #s. Great article!

  68. Donna, here is my conflict. I would really like to blog more about how to decorate, actually teaching. Like how you build a vinette or why you hang a picture at a certain heigth, how you create a room, scale, texture and so on. I think that is unique because most people show what they have made. But if I go in that direction how do I get that out there? You can't link that up to very many parties, it's ususally show us what you have made or worked on, rarely a "how to" type of thing. Also explaining "how to" would be wordy, most people want a few pretty pics and little to read. Any suggestions?

  69. #71 Laura, just do it! Attempt to balance out your photos with your info so you don't have too many of one and not the other. Remove all words that don't need to be there to keep the info clean and simple. Attempt titles and some steps in point form so they're easy to grasp.

And yes, you may link a tutorial such as this up to any SNS Home Decor linkup. :) You'll soon see if the response is good or not for that kind of post. If you show a before, during and after in the same post, response seems to be better. Everyone LOVES the after. Ask me how I know...

#27 Kolein, I'm pretending to work in that picture. It was a fake stage to pretend I was working hard. I was all giddy about the cool gear and asked if I could try it on when the reno team was working on my house. I'm such a goof. :)

Thanks to all for your incredibly kind comments. What a gracious bunch you are!! xo

  71. Donna, this was a great post! Thanks so much for writing this. I love blogging. So far, having a project to write about has not been a problem. Finding the angle and actually writing the post is what takes so long. I've got to figure out what I need to speed up the actual writing side of blogging! Thanks for all the encouragement here today!

  79. Great information, as always, Donna! I find I have to keep asking myself all the time if it's worth it- I always come back to the people and relationships more than just for me. That's what I like most about blogging. :-)

  81. Hi Donna! What a great post!!
I struggle with feeling inferior and jealous of other people out there, and I have always had a need to be complimented and I love pats on the back from people. I also have a problem with thinking things like "my kitchen remodel is just as good as theirs is", or "my style is so much nicer than theirs, so how come they have so many more followers than me?" It sounds horrible, but it is the truth. When I do a remodel or project that I think is wonderful, and I don't get as many compliments on it that I think I should have, all of a sudden I start to wonder if I have very good taste at all, and that is when I start to consider quitting blogging for good. I have considered quitting blogging several times, but for some reason I keep coming back. I guess I just love the great inspiration out there, and it is nice to hear from my faithful blog friends that always leave a comment no matter what I blog about.
So anyway, those are my thoughts and feelings. Hopefully there is someone else out there that reads this comment that feels the same way as I do and can relate.

  83. You know? I think it's what blogging means to each person. I've never taken my blog as seriously as some people do... I started blogging over 4 years ago during our first Guatemalan adoption. I had never even heard the word "blog". I started it to share our visit trips with family and friends. All of a sudden I had this entire blogging family. That blog had so many hits... I was actually recognized once in a World Market with Anne Pearce. That kinda freaked me out to tell you the truth. As the years went by (and another daughter was brought home) my blog has evolved. I go through spurts. Sometimes I find that it takes more energy than I have to give. I love to share my home, but I don't like the feeling of competition. Like me. Follow me. Vote here. Vote there....I love to read other's blogs, but I cut back on my blogging. My kids really appreciate that extra attention. :) I'm sure there will be times that I hit a blogging spurt again. I always wonder if anyone really reads it when I do, but the bottom line is that it doesn't really matter to me. I do it for me... It's a journey to making our home, and I know I'll enjoy looking back at my different projects in years to come. Even now I love to go back and look through my adoption blog.... It brings back so many memories of those adoptions. That's where I put my feelings out there... I poured myself out to strangers, and it got me through those adoptions and the time after when they first came home. I love what you do and enjoy looking at what you do... I think for me my blog is just a tiny itty bitty part of my life. It's what I'm comfortable with. I am so happy for all of you that have achieved all this success... It's wonderful to see where you are now after watching you from the beginning. :)
