Blog office blunder - with sound desk building tips. :)

Between Christmas and New Years, I had abit of kiddo downtime with my son going to his other parent's place for a few days. Being hit with a creative explosion, I shared on Facebook my big pie in the sky plans to morph 6 rooms. SIX.

This wasn't my intent. :) It just started with one room and snowballed from there because I'm borrowing from some rooms to make others work.

I've been showing some progress with my son's room on Facebook lately. Over the weekend we ripped down a wall!

However, the FIRST room I worked on that I didn't blog about yet was the blog office.

Revamping the office with a farm table and armoire

I had a swell plan. I was going to dismantle the shelving unit and palette table and bring it downstairs with me. Then bring in a farm table and armoire I have to replace what was here.

So, big brave me took down Christmas AND slid the wall unit into the hallway and dismantled the palette desk. Here we go! Big great changes ahead!

Next came the farm table which was abit too tall, so I cut the legs shorter.

Desk measurements matter

- arms parallel to floor when typing
- eyes level with top of your monitor

I desired the table to max out at 27.25"from the floor. The net says a desk ought to be 29" but I say it depends on your chair, your keyboard, your monitor size and your own body for that matter. I personally like to type down onto the keyboard rather than have my arms float too high up.

If you aren't sure what's right for you, prop a bunch of stuff up like I did in this picture last summer to figure out what feels right before making permanent modifications to furniture.

Consider lowering a big monitor

And if you think you can't have your monitor low enough because it's of the monster variety, I beg to differ. There is always a way if you're crafty enough.  How I sunk my own monitor seamlessly into my own palette desk top is HERE.

Cutting down table legs to fit

My weapon of choice was the sawzall. The blades are pretty long, making free hand style deep cuts relatively easy.

Protect equipment and floors prior to working

I proceed to cut the legs. I'm sorry the sawdust all over some of the equipment makes you itchy. When all else fails, laugh, proceed and don't do it again.  (translation... crap!!)

Protect your nice floors too. This looks sloppy but I was pretty careful with the tools on the floor. It was just... quicker. :)

 When building, use SCREWS

But simply cutting the legs wasn't so quick like. The craftsman that made the table used nails for some strange little extensions... which made my saw stop pretty quick. I didn't know the nails were there until I hit one. I thought my blade was just dull...

Anywhoo, the nail stopped my blade in just the right place, then I pounded on the cut area with a hammer until I could chunk off some wood to get a crowbar in there to yank off the rest.

I got REALLY good at this on the 4th. But not a moment before.

And guess what! The table was still too tall, so I did it all over again. But with no nails, it was a breeze in comparison.

Then I staged my armoire with storage in mind. Cute!

And then I pushed the table in place, piled it with my stuff and stood back.

And hated it. Then went to bed.

Don't get me wrong. It was cute. But it was too small for two computers and I created a dark wooden cave that required flicking on lights. And with the doors closed? No. I can't face closed in areas or walls. It feels like my nose is being pushed in... so, no.

Sleep on it when undecided

I really did go to bed but it wasn't to give up. I like to sleep on big decisions if somewhat unsure. And moving my palette desk and wall unit was a big change, so I wanted to be sure.

So.. did I hate it the next day too? Yup. But I was going to do it anyway and eventually make it work because I needed that other stuff downstairs!

Until I received an email from a blog reader moments later. She was in LOVE with the blog office and wanted to know how to build the wall unit. Urp...

If that wasn't the writing on the wall, I don't know what was. I giggled with relief and pushed the palette table and wall unit back into place again and hugged the works! And made it better and stronger. More screws, just lots of touch ups I didn't do the first time.

And then I lightened up the accessories, with storage in mind.

Welcome home, palette table and funky wall unit! I missed you so! Honestly. I felt sick for the two days it was gone. :)  But at least it didn't cost me anything to try something new.

What's next? Let's just take each day as it comes. :)

Giving friends make my place look cool! Thanks!

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe I have the layout of your house wrong in my mind. But that armoire with the desk in front of it. Isn't that exactly how it was before you built the wall unit?
Anyway. We live and we learn and we morve furniture and move it back. So is the life of us decorator chicks.
I am glad the wall unit and the desk are back. They belong there. If you need them someplace else too, well too bad, you'll just have to built them a second time.
Happy furniture moving to you!!! (btw when do you find time to go to your big girl job? You always seem to be working in your home. Me? sneaking in at your blog while at work, that's how I do it :-) ).

  2. I must admit when you blog started , I was disappointed you were moving the wall unit.I have that picture saved on my computer as inspiration. Although I liked the new look (if you don't have room for it,I have plenty lol)I really love the "new old" look. All the accessories are perfect. Can't wait to see what you do next!

  4. Too funny! I can't tell you how many times I move something around because I am so sick of looking at it, to find I missed it when it was gone. I didn't mind the armoire desk but the old one is the bomb!

  5. OMG Donna ... I'm so glad you changed it back, with the lighter changes. I think your office absolutely defines your style. The other was just toooo conventional.

  6. making a big change, getting it all done and then hating the result... no i have not idea what that's like :)

ok, i'm lying. :) i know *exactly* what that's like!! in fact, i *just* felt that way over the weekend!!

  7. I was going to ask the same thing as Marianne! I kept scrolling back and forth thinking to myself...isn't this the armoire she had there? The one that was too small? lol, you must be worn out from all that moving. Can you use the armoire in your office downstairs?

  8. Wow, was I ever surprised to see that you were going to move out your palette desk so quickly! But, along with everybody else, I'm glad you moved it back.....I love it there too. Sometimes we just gotta do all that hard work to prove we did something right...ugh!

  9. I feel your pain.
I moved an entire room of furniture out of the living room 2 years ago so i could lay a beautiful hand made wool rug. The rug is huge moved all the furniture back only to realize the seating furniture pattern clashed BIG time with the rug pattern. It was like walking in a fun house with those black and white spinning circular things.....made me dizzy. So I moved it all out again and removed the rug.

I have since changed the slipcovers and again emptied the room and moved the rug back. It now looks great.

Sometimes the right pieces need a little tweaking to make them work together.
(my vote is also for the original room set up. It's perfect)

  10. LOL!! I nearly put in my post my distaste for the armoire and table because it WAS too conventional and normal. That is the #1 reason I didn't like it. :)

Yes, this is the original setup. But the stuff is in my way and I was hoping to make it work one more time to gain some extra space. It's now officially confirmed that isn't going to happen.

I have another plan up my sleeve for the armoire. The table? No idea. Maybe move it downstairs. If I use it for anything other than a desk, they now need goofy leg extenders SCREWED on. :)

    Live and learn!

  11. Oh that wall unit - it has become a piece of blogging history! So glad you put it back in its rightful place even though I did love the revamp. I seem to spend my life rearranging my house. It could be because I have moved 22 times now and this is the longest I have been in one place for sooo long! I am on a constant quest to make things fit even though they are totally wrong! I think I need to move again! Great start to a new year - you ROCK girl!

  12. Thank you so much for putting it back, I love it that way and was a little panicked!!

  13. I love both...but I think the shelving and crate table is the best, because it lets in the light! I love those narrow windows letting in the light! Maybe if the armoir didn't have those chunky doors...
Well, you found out what YOU LIKE ,I am learning that's what matters most...Can't wait to see the other SIX rooms! (what were you thinking?)

    I need some inspiration!

  14. Serendipity. How funny is it that you got an email from a reader at the moment you needed an idea. I hear you on the dark cave like hutch. I worked inside a computer armoire for 3 years and HATED that dark hole. Then, we used doors for our desks and I love looking out my office window now! http://www.prettyhandygirl.com/2010/08/home-office-makeover-from-dark-and.html

  15. I find you incredibly brave to cut the legs off of a table. I could never. I would have massive anxiety over all the what ifs down the road. I wish I could channel some of your courage and bravery through my internet connection.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Marcie, I didn't fear cutting down the table because I always felt it was abit high for me anyway, even AS a mere eating table. I guess part of my braveness comes from using not very expensive components. There's some peace in that fact! :)

Brittany, I'm going to write a post about creating 'decorating dark caves' one day. It's currently in draft mode but this example was yet another reason that the info continues to be sound. And you confirmed it yet again!

  17. Oh, fickle woman! lol So typical of our breed! It's great! Lesson learned, we often think we are tired of something, only to move it and then realize it was just perfect, before! And you definately...did! Love it!

  18. Yes I have! Many times!! I try to live with the first decision but then....out it goes!
Glad you put the palette table back...I loved that!!

  19. Oh, yes! I have been there. I actually painted a chinoiserie mural in my master bedroom a couple of years ago...worked on it all day, hated it and then painted over it before my husband even got home.

  20. I like the old desk setup much better...glad you changed it back! Also, love the vintage license plate crate with the lovely little star cultivator thing I sent you. Very nice touch! :-) Have a great week! ~Iris~

  21. Yes! Yes! Move that stuff! I've done that too! It's a great work out and at least part of the place gets cleaned, right? I don't visualize well, like you, so I do A LOT of moving around here. I'm still trying to get this little place to sit right. It's not easy!

I love both versions. But you live there!

Can't wait for the creative storage ideas! I've got some I might share too!

  23. Wow. That scared me to death! One of the reasons I started blogging was that desk! Very glad to here it's back in its rightful place. That is some awesome bravery there. Love it.

  24. And hated it. Then went to bed.... haha you made me laugh1 to be honest the original setting (or the latest) was way better the b the desk in front of the cupboard... but hey at least you tried ans saw it did not work ;)

  28. Hello Donna,

Just happened upon your blog and have spent some time reading old posts. And was very touched by the one where you tell the story of why you blog.... There aren't many of us single women out there blogging, are there? I was married when I first started and my blog has seen me through separation and divorce. Nothing to do with blogging, mind you.... Nothing that sImPle! tee hee.... Well anyway, looking at how other couples worked together to realize their dreams helped me to see just how far off track my marriage really was. And I am so very much happier now. Found me a crafty kind of man who lOvEs to help me make my house a better place. I truly am BLESSED. Happy New Year, my new friend!

  29. I know exactly where you are coming from Donna. I do things I hate all the time, but for some reason, others like it. You are probably being to hard on yourself with decisions, but if you don't like it, it's so not worth keeping it. It will drive you batty until it's perfect...

I do have to tell you that I love the crate storage...

    Take care,
    Lisa

  31. I LOVE IT! And I've totally moved things around, gone to bed, and moved it back in the morning! So glad I'm not alone.

Did I miss it or was there a tutorial on how to build the wall unit and table?

  33. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! How am I just now finding your blog????? I am afraid I may spend all night browsing through it now and I really should be working - ahhhh!!!!

  34. Your question: "Ever made a decorating decision you went back on again?"

Oh dear, you've got to be kidding! Around here the furniture competes for how many laps around the house each one has made when I get in the "maybe if I just change this one piece out"....and it's not so uncommon to have that same piece of furniture end up exactly or almost exactly where it was originally - unless of course changing the angle of a piece counts as having been moved....

And like you, I will sleep on something overnight. Surely it couldn't be that bad. And if I go ahead and move it without being sure, then I'll have to move it again maybe two or three times. I couldn't look that bad, maybe I'm just tired. Wake up and look at it....no way is that staying THERE! And it gets moved AGAIN before anything else gets done, even if I'm still in my pj's!

Probably more information than you needed but....oh yeah, I got it going on over here. Seriously bad.

  36. Oh Donna...would you believe...I made my daughter come upstairs and wait whilst I tried desperately to find your posts on your FABULOUS desk area...waded thru blog-bog...trying to remember what the post was called etc...FINALLY found it...AND YOU'D DISMANTLED AND PUT UP ANOTHER!! aaghhh!! so how glad was I (sorry!;)) when you said you hated it and were putting it back together? pallets, ladders and all...YAYAYAY!!! kinda funny really...tho I know when you have your heart set on something and it just doesn't turn out like it is in your mind...it's a bit gutting...and in the least disappointing. Plus all that lugging and moving of furntire, rearranging all your gorgeous 'stuff'...i felt your pain!! but was jumpin for joy to see it all back! ahahaha! ..next time..just pack it up and ship it downunder...no problemo!!
