Missing Jenna

the loss of a dog tribute via Funky Junk Interiors
If you've been following Funky Junk Interiors for any length of time, you'll recognize my canine model in many of my photos. This is our dear sweet Jenna.

Jenna left us today. She passed away after an emergency surgery. (continued with video)

2 days ago we were startled with a flipped stomach (common occurrence in older barrel chested dogs), so I raced her to the vet at 3am. I was given the choice to put her down or save her. After being told her chances were good, I chose life.

husky shepherd cross dog

She stayed in for 2 days and was released yesterday. But she just couldn't hang in there. For whatever reason, God took her out of her pain today and is now at peace.

Jenna was a shepherd husky cross discovered from the pound. She was scrawny and had just had a litter of pups. But I just knew she was the one. She adored us the moment we met her. Her eyes and gentle nature told me so.

dog photography

At the time, we primarily desired a dog for security reasons. But the joke was on us, for she barely barked twice since the time we've had her. She was just one of those timid personalities that loved you to death.

And her name should have been Shadow. I barely made a move without her attached to my hip. My mom commented one time, "You don't even realize it any longer do you? The way she follows you or watches you eat?" Nope. I just expected it. It was as natural as breathing. :)

My sweet girl landed in more photo shoots than I even planned on. But I smiled each time she'd wander into view. Her presence just added real life into any shot.

Below is a video tribute to how much we adored having her in every facet of our lives.  We were so very blessed to have landed THIS dog. She was tailor made for us in every way.

Words can't defy now much I will miss my shadow.

  7. My heart is breaking for you and your son. I know the heart break of losing sweet pets all too well lately. I currently have an old horse that is nearing the end. I take comfort in their memories and each bright spot they brought to my life. Even though they are free from pain, we two-legged creatures take some time for our hearts to heal. Again, so very sorry..... :'(

  47. What a beautiful tribute to your sweet girl! Am so sorry to hear of the loss of your fur baby. It wasn't until I lost my Aikman in December that I realized how intertwined an animal is in our lives. The tears I still shed now are so worth the 11 years he gave me of his sweet presence. An animals lovers soul is just different..not better, just different. There is a quote from a child about why he thought animals don't live as long as humans "The boy said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life, like loving everybody and being nice, right?" He continued calmly, "Well, see animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."....She was incredibly blessed to have you and my thoughts will be with your family during this time. Rest in peace beautiful Jenna....

  50. Oh my!! Such a BEAUTIFUL tribute!! I am so choked up after watching your video, I can barely see the screen to type the message. She was a BEAUTIFUL dog. The pictures of her are just amazing, its like she was just a part of the scenery, she is never "posed" in a picture, and not really looking at you while you are taking the picture - just like she is supposed to be there. LOVE, love, love the one of her reflection in the puddle, and the one of her paws in the sand. Dogs certainly have a way of getting into our hearts and leaving the pawprints there - FUREVER!! I hope you and your son continue to find comfort in your memories!! Bless you always!!

  109. I also had a shepherd husky mix for twelve years - her name was Herself - the first time I heard her really bark she was almost 10 - I had left my son in a carriage on the sidewalk to go back into the house for something - someone approached the carriage and she barked - I did not know she had it in her . . . so I totally feel your loss - I still miss Herself, had her 8 years before my children were born . . . I have never had another dog . . will send you picture so you can see how much our dogs looked alike

  114. Donna, you made me cry, I am living a similar situation with my dog Ally, she's got a tumor in her belly and will be leaving us soon, I am so devastated by her sickness and seeing Jenna made me feel so much more tender than what I was already, I am so sorry for your loss, but as you said at the end of the video "till we meet again" are the perfect words. What a beautiful dog was Jenna, but what I like the most was the beautiful life you gave her, and how devoted she was to you. You will certainly meet her again and will remain together forever. Hugs to both of you and warm regards.

I'm an old lady and found that you can't replace a pet with another, all my pets have been pound rescues mostly seniors who I have tried to give a good old age all of them have left their mark and were loved till the end.

Give yourself time to remember, my heart goes out to you both, your blog has been an inspiration to me.

  118. I am so sorry for your loss of your beautiful Jenna. Thank you for sharing the lovely tribute to your wonderful friend. My dear friend Carol also lost her dog, unexpectedly this past Tuesday, right before he was to undergo emergency surgery. Heaven welcomed Jenna and Buddy this week. I bet they are playing joyfully together.

  119. I feel your pain and I am so sorry. We lost our 14 year old best friend in April. My oldest "human child" is 12. I always called Buster my first child. That was the hardest time in my life, and for our whole family. What kept us going was the distraction of PeeWee, one of Buster's puppies that we kept from the last litter that he fathered. Unfortunately less than 2 months later, she got out of the house while we were unpacking from vacation and was hit by a car the day before her 4th birthday.I wish I could say it gets easier. But we do go on with our lives and I try not to think about them. But it's like your mother said, they are a part of us and we don't even realize it. Daily routines turn into memories because you just expect them to be there. Simple tasks like cleaning my kitchen and dining room floors remind me that there is nobody there to clean up food that my kids drop. I made pancakes this morning and I always made an extra one for Buster. I pray that you will use your wonderful memories to get you through each day. I stronly believe that we will see our beloved pets in heaven on day. I had a casket built for my Buster. We said our final goodbyes to him with a funeral in which I shared memories of him with my family (there were about 16 there). That gave me closure. Saying my final goodbye to him broke my heart, but I knew he was at peace. And, like your Jenna, he no longer suffers and has a new young and healthy body to run. And they are watching down on us.

  121. A Parting Prayer
Dear Lord, please open your gates
    and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
    across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign her to a place of honor,
for she has been a faithful servant
and has always done her best to please me.

Bless the hands that send her to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing her from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of her life
with the love she has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor her
by sharing those memories with others.

Let her remember me as well
and let her know that I will always love her.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow her to accompany those
    who will bring me home.

    Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of her companionship
and for the time we've had together.

    And thank you, Lord,
    for granting me the strength
to give her to you now.

    Amen.

How lucky Jenna was to have found you and your family and too have been so loved and so well taken care of. I hope you find comfort in all of your memories and in the fact that she was loved and happy. hugs Tobey

  128. So very sorry for your loss. Here is a poem for you during this time of loss....
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

  130. Donna, I am moved to tears for the loss of your furry friend. This brought back fresh memories of loosing my akita months ago. I know your pain because they are our family members. We share so much with our pets and they depend on us for all their needs. When we can't fix their pain and sickness it rips our hearts out just like if it were our child. What Jenna and my Dakota gave to us was worth more than we could ever return ......unconditional love. Always by our side, our obedient furry friends. I pray that the Lord will comfort you and your son dring this time of sadness. Hugs from a far away blogger friend.

  136. Oh, I hate to read this. It really is like the loss of family member. They are so dependent on us yet ask for nothing but a little love.
I debated whether or not to even click on this post since we went through the same thing in January. It's still a little too fresh. I know how much the comments meant to me so I couldn't not click on it and read what happened. I'm so sorry for you and your son but you rescued her and gave her the life she deserved while she gave you probably so much more. Hang in there and take care. We lasted about 5 months before we broke down and got another pup. The house seemed empty and the hole in our heart needed to be filled.

We aren't ready to let her go yet but I think she is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know she will give us a signal when the time comes. Whether you know it is coming or not, doggie death is difficult. You realize what a presence they have once they are gone. Bless you & your son. And your sweet doggie's soul.

  165. I'm so sorry for your loss and can relate. It will be 3 years in September that we had to put our beloved Max down and it still brings tears to my eyes as I'm typing. We rescured him from people who hadn't treated him well and I believe he thought we saved his life and that was what his mission in life was to do for us. He was a great watch dog and would have done anything to protect us.

There were actually an incident of stangers stopping by and he went crazy. I didn't underdstand it at the time, but later found out those two guys had robbed a neighbor earlier that day. I always knew that dog had our backs and I loved him so much:-)

You are in my thoughts at this time and one thing that made it easier for us was we had another dog already and have since added one more to the family. I just like having two dogs and they are such good buddies.

    Take care,
    Kathleen

  170. This is a beautiful and touching video tribute to your loving dog Jenna. I lost a precious dalmatian friend of 14 years in 2008 and I still miss him every day. Now we rescue pitbulls destined for euthanasia. We have four of them so far. They help to fill the void and are so loving and appreciative of having a good, safe, loving home. Most have been through terrible times by the time we adopt them. Sometimes it helps to carry on the love we feel for our pets by loving new ones. God Bless you and your son as you heal from your sorrow.

  171. I'm so sorry, Donna. We lost our Max in 2002 and I swear that I still see him out of the corner of my eye, following me around during the day as I putter around the house and yard. I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Blessings, Mary

  175. I'm so very sorry for your loss Donna. I originally had stopped by from seeing a link to your blog, but as I was reading thru your posts, I stopped immediately when I saw this post about Jenna's passing. I had a "shadow" cat named Mr. Boober, a giant mush almost 20 pounds who we called our "gentle giant" because he was rather timid for such a big guy. He followed me everywhere, and yes I didn't even realize it half the time because it was just part of what our days were like. Jenna was such a gorgeous dog, and I love the photo especially with her among the autumn leaves in the large puddle. I hope that your memories of Jenna can help you through the grief of losing her. I know there's a giant hole right now in your heart...and I wish you much peace during this time. It is truly heartbreaking.
