On selling our projects and talents

SOLD.

Gee... you'd think if you had something for sale, that you'd be happy to sell it, yes?

My sweet blog friend BJ from Sweet Nothings sent me this magazine with one of my movie stars in it.

I just received the magazine so it's still extreme novelty to see my memory table in actual print!

BJ loved the table so much she went and made one herself!

Isn't it awesome?

My table had since gone to our local restaurant, the Vedder Mountain Grille where I am displaying some items for sale.

And then I got the email.

"Hey Donna, your table sold on Sunday!  I'm happy and sad.
Thanks again for all your beautiful things!"

I smiled, but I also had a lump in my throat. I could never bring my movie star home again.

 SOLD.

I also brought in my GROCERY sign. In which owner Laurie deemed she didn't want to see it gone EVER so she bought it herself!

 SOLD.

And remember the mattress spring bb project?

The little bb with the #5 also sold there too.

Believe me when I say, I didn't have much on display at the restaurant. But it appears my handmade items are moving. And that is very encouraging!

So I'm gonna be a big girl and bring some more of my favs over. And with any luck, they will also sell.

I also promised to show you some decorating I'll be doing at the restaurant, so I'll work on a few photo shoots this time as we go along too.

One of my other dreams is to land writing assignments that love tutorials such as these projects offer. Because there's going to be alot more coming! So if you're hiring, sign me up! :)

Fear to succeed sure can get in the way. Here's to showing fraidy cats like myself how to chuck fear to the side and do what you love for a living already.

I mean, isn't it about time?!?

  3. Happy that you're selling stuff, but I can imagine it's like selling part of you...good thing you know everything is going to a good home!

I've been using more of my old junk on the deck and in the yard, old ladders and barbed wire fence have been featured in my recent projects. Love coming by for inspiration. Thanks!

  5. Congratulations on your success! Your table is great!

I can't believe how much your lovely black cat looks just like my old cat! She's no longer with us so your photo brings back a lot of memories.

  6. Well done! I am not surprised about the sales, your creations are amazing! It is a little sad... but you have such great memories...and so do we! I can't wait to see what you create next! X

  7. hi Donna - well done on your sales. it's always bittersweet. I just wrote a post saying that i'm ramping up my furniture business also. http://lilyfieldlife.blogspot.com/2011/06/ramping-things-up-help.html
it's so rewarding this life. You are so amazing - you have nothing to fear.

  8. Yay Donna! I can't for the life of me understand why you would even think for moment that your things wouldn't sell. They are all fabulous and an inspiration to all of us. Your things are in magazines for goodness sakes... how does that even happen if isn't great stuff!?!
I am sure you will make money and fame by selling and publishing your work. You are doing just what I would love to do!

  9. Good for you, Donna! I'm sure your things weren't there long before they were snapped up. Lucky buyers! It is always hard to sell some of your favorite creations, but also rewarding in many ways. I always thought you'd do well with a booth at an antique mall, along the lines of what MMS is doing. I'm sure your stuff would be snapped up in a heartbeat there, too!

    Best,

    Kimberly

  10. Well this makes me think of MMM Marion when she creates the latest and greatest dining room set, and then she lets someone buy it! gah! I couldn't sell anything that took tons of work, if I really loved it. So you are selling your coolest stuff, and there is more cool things you haven't even thought of yet.

  11. How exciting and encouraging! I haven't had much time to check in on you lately, but I'm glad to see that even though I'm falling down on my job, you're still doing great and moving right along.

Hey, at least you have Hollywood pictures of your movie star! Most people have to sell their stuff and literally never see it again.

Hey, email me again. My computer got completely redone and nobody told me I'd lose most of my emails!

  12. Congrats to you! It does sound like your items are a hit! We will soon be seeing FJI items for sale at Pottery Barn, if they are smart! I would have a hard time parting with those things though. I don't think that I could do it. Good luck!

  13. Oh I so understand. I am often torn about stuff I take to our booth at our antique mall. There have been a couple of times where something didn't sell in a couple of weeks so I brought it back home to keep. It's strange to feel happy and sad at the same time over something selling. At least you know that they went to a good home. (I would have loved that Grocery sign for myself but shipping costs would have been ridiculous unfortunately).

  14. You are a talented gal and I wish you well in this new selling venture. I'd love to buy some of your handmades! I have a question about watermarking my photos. I tried to do it like you showed in your post (on Picassa) which worked but when I post the pics on my blog the name is not there on them. I have to go into Picnik to do it again. I tried the steps 'copy text' and 'paste text' but am not sure how that works. Please HELP!! I'm computer illiterate sometimes and am surprised I've learned so much in the past year since I started blogging. Thanks in advance! Hugs, Pamela

  15. It can be hard letting go of something that you put your heart into, even if you never intended on keeping it in the first place. I struggle with this problem when I make things for my craft shows. I have to just tell myself that I can't possibly keep everything that I make & it's just rewarding to hear people tell you that they love you're creations. And how exciting that you're being given the opportunity to do some decorating for a place that so many people will see! WOW! I see many junky doors opening up for you...

  16. Yes, It's time! So glad you chucked fear to the side...you are so talented. Best of luck. Sarah

  17. You think of so many creative things to make that if you didn't sell a few things every now and then you'd have it stacked to the ceiling. And then we'd have to call that Hoarders program on you. Gotta make room for new ideas. Congrats on the sales!

  18. So happy that your pieces are coveted by others and you are getting recognized for the wonderful work you do. It is always difficult to see pieces go, you get very attached to them while you create. I still get a heavy heart when certain things I have made are going to new homes. The big thing is there is always another project, I am sure your list is long....and we all want to see what you come up with !

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would LOVE to sell some items...like Pam wrote, my garage is going to be featured on Hoarders soon if I don't. I can not find a vendor to use/display them though! You are so lucky to have that Grill that is willing/able to help you out.

  20. Congratulations, Donna! It's so rewarding to create something just because you want to and then see it sell because someone else fell in love with it too! Keep those ideas coming! We're loving them too!

  21. I just had to tell you how much I love that tool box with the drill handle. That is so very clever and creative. Congrats on selling your table - I know it is sad when you sell something you truly love - but you have to remmeber somebody must have loved is just as much and now it has a wonderful home.

  22. Congrats! All the stuff you make is so great, here's to many more projects and many more sales for you. I sold my first piece (the map buffet) to a local store last Saturday, that first sale is so rewarding. Thanks for your inspiration :)

  23. Hi Donna-

I have the hardest time selling the stuff a I made, each piece becomes so personal. Over the years it has become easier, but I still find my self wanting to pull the item back from the person buying it. It is nice that you have a place to display your pieces for all to see.
    My best - Diane

  24. How exciting...congrats! They should be hard to part with...they are all so cool. You are giving each buyer a piece of you...that's why it is so hard.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Your stuff is awesome so I definitely see how it sells so quickly. The only thing you have to fight with is the emotional attachement. It's hard to see good friends go.

  26. Congratulations Donna.
It must be nice for you to know the treasures you make aren't only invaluable to you but they are so very valuable to others... Bless :)

  27. I can understand the excitement of a sale along with the sadness! It's like a member of the family is going away!! Your treasures are so cute! Thanks for sharing!
    Blessings!!

  29. Congratulations!
I'm sure it is hard but your mind is always working and always on to the next project. Your brain continues to work....keep nourishing it!
    Have a great day.

  31. That doesn't surprise me one bit that you are selling your stuff that fast. You do such wonderful work. I love all of your projects.
I have that magazine too. Congratulations on
    your success.

  32. Congrats on selling your stuff! You should be so happy, now you can make more stuff. I love the tool boxes you made. I was gone when you had your SNS for toolboxes or I would have showed off mine that I found!

  33. I have to laugh when you say you are surprised and then when you are a fraidy cat. You have more inner strength than most of us. Now, go cut two more round tops so you are ready to replace the sold table. Now, lets review: You cleaned out extra furniture; you started on teen boys room, but he hasn't decided on a theme yet; you set up your office downstairs; you had a garage sale; you set up all new SNS's; you created a tea shop over looking the garden; you fixed two closets; wrote tutorials on photography and making things; and have started on the garden. That's a lot accomplished in the last few months. Well done! Could you tell us what font(?) to use so we can make our own cow signs? I really need a "Babe" (my dad) and a "Madeline" (my mom.)
You are very inspiring. I am almost ready to pick up my camera to figure out how to use it. Ann

  35. Donna, nothing excites me more than seeing others chase their dreams. Your talent and creativity inspire anyone that visits your pages. And, the fact that you're such a sweetheart doesn't hurt either!

Congrats, congrats, wish I owned a magazine....I'd hire you in a NY minute! Publish a book girl so I can beg you for a book signing at my store! No doubt you are headed for great things!

  36. I say bravo to those who love what they do and can make a living at it!! I say go for it girl ~ congrats on the sale of the items so far ~ and just think of all the junk out there just screaming for you to make something funky out of it so someone lazy like me can buy it!

  37. Oh Donna congratulations and I am not surprised your items sold so quickly. They are so wonderful and beautiful and funky too!

  38. Do you know this quote from Marianne Williamson?
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.' We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
from A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson

    Shine on Donna!

  40. While reading this post it reminded me of the wisdom my son shared with me one day...I was also sad to see one of my crosses sell and my son quietly said; "you can't keep them all to yourself...your gift of designing crosses was meant to glorify Him not keep to yourself"
Wow! Can our kids blow us away with their wisdom or what?

However, it is really hard to put hours of labor and love into a design and then see it go. To get through this I imagine my design blessing each home it lives in, just like your creations are blessing those who bought them.

I love your creations and know a piece of your heart is in everyone of them. That in itself is worth more than money could buy.
