Isn't this the purdiest thing ever?!?
I squeak when I see something so simplistic and rustic!
By now, you've probably figured out I'm a tad unconventional. If you promise to still be my friend, I'm going to show you what floats my boat when I go shopping for my kinda 'stuff.' Promise? Friends forever? Deep breath..
Welcome to 'The Junkin' Mall'. :)
Yes friends, I find alot of great loot in this here little dumpster division. This place is located where I spend my other life striping firetrucks for a living.
First thing I do when I arrive at this place is grab a coffee, then I go 'out back and browse.' I check all the bins (cool metal stuff) and all the pallets that the firetruck components come in. Gold mine! :)
This bin has made me smile many a day. I even hollered at the boss one day and TOLD him to help me load some o' that junk up for me as it was too heavy. They may not get me but accept me for who I am.
See this cool beam? It came from that lovely wood bin. I had no idea at the time what I would do with it but a plan generally comes my way eventually. I call it 'stock'.
Maybe I shouldn't admit this next bit, but whenever I see this thing, I always wish I could bring the side of it home with me and hang it on a wall. (are you still there?) I LOVE the galvanized and rust appeal with the black lettering. I just do. And I can't help it.
As for these guys? They're always stacked by the hundreds. If they weren't so darn much work to dismantle, I'd bring loads of wood home and store them outside for some nice natural weathering. For stock of course.
Actually, I brought one smaller one home the other day. It was rather unique and just today I held it up and asked my son, "What do you think we should create with THIS?" And my little hero didn't even bat an eye and he was jibber jabbering about all the things we could do. (should I be worried?!?)
By far, the element of the hunt and finding 'nothing' and making it 'something' really ticks my clock.
How about you?
Can ya feel it??
Do you have a favorite unconventional place you shop at or find inspiration?

And thanks again Christine for your sponsorship! I'm always waiting for my blogroll to pop up a new creation of yours so I'll be watching. :)
My blogroll has been out for nearly a week now, so in case you missed week 2, the button will take you to the Catalog Hack assignment. A click worth your time. You should see what these gals created! Yowsa!
Oh. And I listened. So join in! :)
Wow, what a great place to go 'shopping', but it takes true talent to see the potential in all of that junk. And I'd say get that Diesel tank over to your place stat, you'll never forgive yourself if it is gone one day.
ReplyDeleteMany of my favorites were hauled home from the gutter on trash day. I ran across a blog recently that calls them Roadkill, lol!
ReplyDeleteUmm, I wanna go there! I love what you did with your beam {you always seem to amaze with your creativity} I missed your past couple of posts...darn google. Love your bingo board - Definitly have my vote! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI feel ya! I love to dig through junk! I have shown my husband a few of my treasures and he told me to quit digging through other people's trash! But that hasn't stopped me yet!
ReplyDeleteYour adorable! Too funny! I love that metal thing too! I see things and don't know what the heck they are, but tell my hubby "that is so cute"! LOL What do they know? LOL!
ReplyDeleteThat was fun to see. I laughed when you showed the pallets. My sis and I once took an empty sod pallet, chopped it up and made fun planters with them. The wood was so old and weathered. My hubby thought we were nuts!
ReplyDeleteI loved your "shopping" site! I could so see that "DIESEL" hanging up on the wall. That would be so cool!! I bring things home and hubby always scratches head! LOL! He knows I have some idea going on in my head! Then he just smiles! I am so glad he smiles!!!!!! LOL!

Oh, I just knew when I saw that Diesel tank that you'd have your eye on that too! It does have a terrific patina. I've seen pallets used on the wall as towel holders... perhaps there is a use there. You always do the most creative things!
ReplyDeleteThat diesel barrel is the best. Anything with writing on it gets my heart fluttering. Love what you did with the beam. Jars and I have a little love affair going on too. I just renovated my kitchen and when I was unpacking the boxes I found out I had 3 boxes of jars to put away! I decided it was time to donate some (not too many, but some).
ReplyDeleteYou know, I have to drag my husband to your site to prove to him that I am not nuts, but he still thinks I need to wear a disguise on treasure hunts lest someone realize the dumpster diver is related to him : )
ReplyDeleteDonna, you have the best job! What a great place to be able to discover your next amazing creation. AND YES, you must get that DIESEL tank. It would be great on the wall or lawn art with those wonderful headboards you found. I can see it all now, out back with your adorable garden shed! Perfection! I used to have a place similar to your treasure trove, they have since closed so I'm back to traveling the roads!
ReplyDeleteLOVE The window display!
oh my gosh......i am coming to visit!!!!! i have to go shopping with you!!!
ReplyDeletelove letters or numbers....add a little rust and bingo...i'm lovin' it!!!!
the beam is awesome too!!! great finds!!!
Love the Alaskan Copper board and I am with you on the Diesel Container...
ReplyDeleteOnce I saw a rusted wrecking ball - couldn't convince my husband that it would make a great yard ornament...I don't get it... ;0
Donna, you speak my decorating language! :) This from a girl with a sled and a ladder on my living room walls.. I love your funky junk style and your blog. its my favorite. have a good one!!
ReplyDeleteBe still my heart! I wish I had someplace like this to go to. Whenever we go anywhere I am always on the hunt for "junk" it makes my heart race!
ReplyDeleteLove that beam!!!! And I would soooo hang that diesel on the wall!!
ReplyDeleteOoo you lucky dog! I don't have anyplace like that that I know of around here....but I'll be keeping my eyes open!
ReplyDeleteWeird about your blogroll. Your link showed up fine this morning in mine (on my side bar). Hmmm.
I got a twitter account, but I have no freaking idea what to do with it. I feel like it's just one more techy thing I don't need in my life right now. :) It's hard enough to disengage from the lovely, inspiring blogosphere!
peace,
cindy
You crack me up! I love making something from nothing. Isn't that what life's all about?
ReplyDeleteI think I'm on the wrong planet. I'm so NOT this way. But it's crazy. I love that YOU are! This was one of the best posts I have read EVER! Well, you know what I mean. It's amazing seeing into your world and what makes you tick! And I adore that your son, the little apple, didn't fall far from the tree! And yes, I'm still your friend. The question is ARE YOU MINE? (Dullsville, here!)
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed seeing you strut your stuff on SYTYCD! In fact, I've voted for you both weeks so far. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteSo I have a question, what DO you usually do with the pallets? I have three beautifully aged ones sitting in my garage, just waiting to be dismantled!
ReplyDeleteI was looking for ideas yesterday, and in my search heard that they're treated with lots of chemicals and not supposed to be in the house! :(
What do you think?
-Ann Marie
I love your favorite shopping place... I'm so jealous! I bet most of your stuff is free!
ReplyDeleteI just found a little hole in the wall on Sunday, that has been right under my nose for who knows how long. I didn't purchase anything on that visit...but ever since I came home, let's just say I have visions of sugar plums or grandeur or ...just VISIONS...dancing in my head. I want to go back, I have to go back, I MUST GO BACK THERE!
My b-day is in a few weeks. I'm waiting for the perfect opportunity. That was I can shop with PURPOSE!
bWA-HA-HA-HA! Can't you just see me rubbing my hands together with anticipation?
On the topic of Blogger-
I'm having some issues too. I posted about them here.

Oh, what a great unconventional junk mall. I'm a little geeked up just looking at the pictures. I was immediately drawn to that diesel tank too. I don't have any cool haunts like that, but I do have an "in" with the high school janitor who calls with something every once and awhile. And I do get lots miscellaneous "donations" from friends.
ReplyDeleteMidge
You sure do shop at some interesting places. I'd like to go shopping sometime and see what you actually look for when you are out shopping.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog and just had to comment today... my first time. I just saw a post the other day using old pallets as a plate rack. http://www.remodelista.com/posts/slow-design-pallet-as-plate-rack-by-katrin-erens
ReplyDeleteLooks cool and funky!
Catherine
You seem to have never ending resources for good junk shopping over there. I can't believe all the good finds you come across. I only wish I could be so lucky.
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt that you will be recreating that diesel tank on a piece of metal somewhere in the near future.
I love that Alaska copper beam. So cool! I'm glad that someone eles shops at places like that. There are some places I've been to that my husband banned me from going to when I was pregnant. He thought it was too dangerous! Anyway, you're still my blog BFF.
ReplyDeleteI just acquired the rustiest old milk can-I love it!!! Everyone is asking what color I will paint it...I say -why paint it? I will post it soon!
ReplyDelete~Nancy
Oh darlin' you are speaking my language. A pile of junky wood gets me going! I wish I had more places like that to shop at.
ReplyDeleteI totally get you!!!
ReplyDeleteI love to go along with my husband to our local "metal" recycling place and have a look around. The owner is a long-time friend of his and I have on occasion brought some neat stuff home.
I just love how you use these things to make your home beautiful!
Everytime I see old palettes I want to bring them home...don't you think they would make a fabulous coffee table (topped with a piece of glass?) One of these days, I'll act on it!!
ReplyDeleteyou and i could be the best of friends. the older, rustier and weirder something is the more i love, love, love it!!
ReplyDeleteI'm still with ya - love all that OLD stuff..keep it coming..
