Ikea GORM - perfect shelving kit for the non builder

I'm addicted to Ikea Gorm shelving. There, I said it.

This system is price efficient, easy to put together, and can be customized 101 different ways. So if you desire to get super organized, this is my vote hands down! 

The only thing left to do is book a day to take in Ikea. Tough job, I know.

Now let me show you just how easy this is to assemble. Trust me. Even if you don't know your way around tools, YOU can do this.

Whoops! Wrong kit!  I hate returns. :)

All hardware and instructions are there. Some even come with their own little allen wrenches.

But do check to ensure they are there before you leave the store. Sometimes this stuff falls off.

Solid paintable pine, predrilled holes, precut to size. What's not to love?

Predrilled holes also allows for your system to be fully adjustable.

Gotta love the option to change your mind.

The shelves come in two different depths so you can choose your level of storage.

Unlike most like minded kits at big box stores, with this one you can get extension kits that make your shelving reach to the ceiling.

I generally put the allen wrenches aside (if your kit comes with them) and grab more substantial tools.

Ratchets work and sound really cool but this next method is WAY easier.

A cordless drill with the right bit is definitely my preferred choice.

I chose a closet for this project.

The deeper shelf was the perfect fit.

Fair warning. As this product ages, it darkens. So if you love the blondish pine tone, I'd suggest to stain or paint it before installing. But I wanted it done 3 years ago, so up it went as is.

You CAN do this all yourself like I did, but if you had a 2nd pair of hands handy, it's easier.

The unit was built inside the room it was staying in. I attached legs on one side first, then flipped it over and did the other. The 2nd set of shelving was installed with this unit standing up.

Tip:

* leave enough height between the bottom shelf and floor for easy cleaning

If creating a side by side unit, ensure you select the right hole for the joining side.

Keep all screws loose until all shelves and all posts have been assembled. 

Then tighten the works up.

Felt liners (not included) will protect your floors.

Bracing the back is important to stabilize the unit. The kit comes with it's own metal braces or you can create your own with wood planks like I did for my office if desired.

Predrilling holes makes the job abit easier but wasn't 100% necessary in this case.

And the finished shelving in place.

I left the top empty so I could pack it full of bulk pillows, etc.

An instant linen and games room closet was born!

The nice thing about this unit is it can be dismantled anytime you wish.
