HOW to find IT. (your passion)

Does this sound familiar to you?

Let me tell you a story.

Back a few short years ago, I moved into a wreck of a house that was a head to toe mess. I thought I could fix it but I was oh so very wrong. I was getting buried alive with home repairs and money woes and no skills to do anything about it.

This graduated into learning to work with tools. It was there that I was finally able to tinker on my house half decently. But I still fell short. We're talking toilets about to fall through the floor kinda short.

When a team knocked on my door one day and offered to help me fix my house alongside me, I nearly died. (this story needs to be in a book) A year later with many more skills underfoot, the house was sound, complete, beautiful! But so very empty.

No funds = no furnishings, right? WRONG. I started shopping the curb and making them into what I dreamed up.

This is when Funky Junk fired up. I hesitantly started to share what I was creating, wincing every time I clicked 'publish'.

But the response was actually favourable! Who knew a bunch of junk from the dump would be so well appreciated? I fell in LOVE. So as the blog grew, I put up ads to help pay my way for things I needed for all things blog.

My followers (you) encouraged me further, so I did more.  I started to build real things pulled from the air. Literally. No funds, no tools, few skills =  nothing, right? Wrong again. A friend encouraged me to use any tool he had so I had no excuse. So I built.

Magazines started knocking on my door even from my point and shoot pictures! So I knew then I needed to up the ante just a tad and go as pro as I possibly could on my limited budget. I saved up my blog funds and purchased my current camera.

And then a book deal came knocking. And a 2nd one... (still waiting)

If you were to ask me today what my passion is?

"Creating unique elements for my home out of reclaimed finds.... alongside photo shoots, building stuff, building blog posts, writing, submitting to magazines, and inspiring others through my trials. And I want to write a book book and publish ebooks."

See where I'm coming from? This is where I am today. But what about tomorrow? Or next year?

No idea. You see, if you had asked me what my passion was at the start of this story, I would have said "Motherhood." Because that's where I was and wasn't prepared for more. But as time went on, I met change face to face and we had a chat. And I knew as long as I somehow moved forward, I would eventually get 'somewhere else as well'.

All I know is, we write our own stories. I don't know what I'll be doing next year let alone tomorrow.

I just simply do what I love to do and allow the story to take place at it's own pace, in it's own way.

If you're anxious about finding your own passion,
my advice to you would be this:

Do whatever it is you love and let your own story develop. Take chances, be brave, try new things constantly. Because the more you learn, the more you can do and your story will evolve.

Believe you have a purpose, give thanks, then take purposeful strides towards what you love. The rest will follow when you are ready and not a moment before. I promise. I could tell you stories that would shake your boots on how accurate this paragraph is.

And to prove my point?

Today my thoughts are on my friend Marian from Miss Mustard Seed as she treks to New York for an exciting opportunity.  A couple short years ago Marian had 75 followers. She took chances, followed her heart and was open to new opportunities. She now has a massive blog due to her hard work, is writing for publications AND a real  book book, and is off to New York! Wow! Congrats, friend!

Never say never. :)

Now go on and write that story!

All segments to A Week of Change are HERE.

Thank-you for allowing me to share your letter and who you are, Ronna.

  1. HI DOnna~~~ This blog post couldnt have come at a better time. Thanks you for the inspirational words. Last year I started an etsy shop and a blog. It was a leap, but I am so glad that I did. But, to keep moving ahead we need to get into new ventures and take chances and not be afraid. This is one of my biggest challenges. I am truly going to keep your words close by.
Thank you and have a great day~~~

  2. I love that you did not confine your passion to one thing. I think that is my problem; I try to identify one and there are so many others.

    Thanks.

  3. Rosie, it was honestly not intentional. I just fell in love with EVERYTHING I'm doing. Never would have thought....

Not sure being a jack of all trades is the answer either! Is there a right way to do this? No idea. :)

  6. (sorry typo on earlier try)
Passions can change and take time to develop. I was constantly creating things as a child and then went a different direction... now back to creating and starting to get a business off the ground at age 50. I hope most of you young gals out there don't take so long!

  7. Just what I needed to hear! I have been struggling with what to do with myself lately. Sadly, I had to close my antique shop in August after 6 years due to the economy, and am facing an empty nest. I'm feeling pretty lost. Your encouragement is so helpful! I know there is a new chapter in my life waiting to begin, and I need to stop re-reading the last one. It's going to be hard, but I'm going to try.

  10. Thank You for this post!!!This is exactly where I'm at! A friend of mine suggested that I start a blog about all the goings on in my life so I did just that last week. It's a start I have no idea where it's going, I have so many things to share but I don't know my passion! I will be open and try to be brave. Thank you for sharing.
    Hugs,

  11. I can totally relate with Ronna and her question.

I said "raising Quail" before...but you know that was just a throw something out there. After I thought about it a while~ well, it fell flat.
I like doing the homesteading thing. Quail is just a small part of it.
I'm going back today and re-read this whole weeks series.
I've hit a wall. I'm Riding the fence; it's time to get off the fence, be on one side or the other. Go back the way I came or move forward...

Lots to think about Donna. Thanks for this series...

  12. Oh so true. I am all over the place with my blog mainly because that reflects my life, and I love it! I do not have a niche per se but my blog is mainly my own journal and all that wish to come along for the ride are welcome. I enjoy the encouragement you give to think outside the box and revel in your own uniqueness.

  13. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm extremely new at blogging so I often wonder if anyone out there would care or want to see what I'm up to. It can be a little scary to put yourself out there and wait for the feedback, be it good or bad. Regardless though, I'm struggling to make sure that I stay true to myself. I see so many blogs full of beautifully taken photos, perfect furniture, place settings straight out of a magazine, ect and I wonder "who would want to look at a silly hat I made or this simple organizing tip?" but I also know that I can't be something I'm just not. I don't know that my blog will ever do as well as some others out there but I know I'd be miserable if I spent too much time worrying about what others think and not enough time worrying about what I'm most passionate about.

Thanks for helping spread this message of hope. It's nice to see that someone's passions can really take off and that even the most well put together and successful bloggers once started off as confused, frustrated, and maybe a little lost. ;)

  14. #13 Rebecca, if YOU love the hat, someone else will too.

It doesn't matter what someone else does or likes. What matters is that you're true to yourself. You'll garner an audience that likes what YOU do that way. It's your blog after all. xo

    To C who emailed me:

You don't know what your plan is because you're not suppose to know. Keep trying everything under the sun out. One will start to stand taller from the rest one day and that's the one you'll latch to. From that experience, you'll branch out to even newer ones. It continuously evolves.

No one is 'done'. Ever. If you're done, you've decided to stop growing. Growing is the key to living.

Just DO. It'll make sense one day. Ask me how I know.

#6 Julie, I agree. Youth tends to take the path of least resistance. Gotta work HARD for what you love. But also sometimes we aren't ready sooner. We're all in different places for different reasons. Make the most of NOW regardless. The past no longer matters except from the experiences honed from it.

  17. Beautifully written Donna and every word you wrote is dead on! Our passions are a gift from God, this is why we are only truly happy when we are following our passions no matter what they may be. It took me until 50 to realize this and I am so very grateful...and happy!

  18. Thanks, Donna! I'm a newbie blogger and I love it - and there's so much I need to learn about it - but I'm moving forward - which is what I think will be my "word of the year". Forward!

  24. I'll have to do a post on my blog about how I came to the place I'm currently at. It's far to long a story to put in your comment box, but my passions continue to unfold. Most of them were born out of necessity. I agree with you Donna. Do what you love. Blogging has allowed me to share many of my passions, and has become one of them.

  25. It's funny I wasn't looking for any encouragement but I am glad I stopped by today. I am following my passion/s photography and service and have combined the two in a blog I started a few months ago and it's had some real ups and downs. Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. Feel free to stop by my blog if you have a free moment...ha ;) TheSIPproject.blogspot.com
