1. I didn't know 'my' colors.
Long ago there was this one girl I worked with at a dept store that knew ‘colors’. And one day she pulled me aside and told me I wasn’t wearing the right color for me. I looked in the mirror at my lacy cream blouse and smart jade green slacks which were actually both very pretty, and realized my face looked ‘tired.’

So I put her theory to the test. The next day I wore what she suggested. Strong cool colors. Black slacks and a red and white top. Another glance in the same mirror showed that I was bursting with life in comparison... hmmmm...
2. I care about me more now.
I admit I don’t talk much about makeup and hair and clothing. But when BlogHer approached me asking if I’d like to be a part of a new series on taking care of US rather than our homes, I felt it was a worthy post.
Personally, I’ve avoided working on ‘myself’ for a little too long. I prefer to play on my house, but let's face it, when we make half an effort on ourselves, it shows. Lately I've been paying a little more attention to what I've been wearing and that my hair isn't stuck in my big 'ol clip all the time. And when rushed, on goes my scrappy white ballcap and I 'fake it!' :)
3. I use to sell cosmetics.
Yes, I use to be more of a girly girl. :) And something I learned pretty quick when selling cosmetics was that whatever ‘season’ you were made a difference in what makeup tones looked best on you. Just like my clothing experience.
4. I am a 'winter'.
Did you know you're a 'season?' What that means is your skin tone, hair and eye color determine what tones look best on you, or, what season you are.
For example, I’m a ‘winter’. So the colors that look best on me are cool tones. Bluer reds, truer greens, deep navy, crisp white and icy tones work best on a ‘winter’. I can’t wear warm undertones with yellows or oranges or creams unless I wish to look like I have the flu. :)
Finding out what season you are isn’t difficult. Simply google ‘find your colors’ or something similar and you’ll get loads of free advice.
Now... the question BlogHer posed to me to answer was:
Fall is right around the corner.
What are the Autumn colors and must haves in makeup?

5. I don't wear makeup tones according to the time of year.
I know. :) Once a rebel, always a rebel. So here is my advice.
Find out what season YOU are first. Chose according to that, then have a look to see what tones and shimmers intrigue you for a given season.
Perhaps you'd like more shimmer during Christmas, and matte in the fall. Or lighter tones by day and deeper at night. You can use both theories while still using the right colors for your season.
(Bet you had NO idea how smart I was with all this, huh? Sooo many hidden talents I tell ya...)

And how you apply it makes a big difference as well. If you haven’t experimented much with makeup and such, it may be worth your while to join a home makeup party or get some help in a department store. They can help you with color choices and technique.
Expensive makeup isn’t always the best either. I’ve found lower quality products that did the same job or better as the higher end, so always ask for advice when shopping.
In a nutshell?
Finding makeup tones to enhance your own personal ‘season’ will have you looking like a million bucks any time of year! :)
Are you up with the makeup trends?
Does it matter to you what color makeup you wear in the fall?

hmmmm, you are a wealth of information! But you are right, and we do feel better when we look better. So now I need to not only work on my house, my creativity, so in addition to joining Weight Watcher (which I did) I need to visit the makeup counter. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThat was very enlightening. I have had my in's and out's on the girly thing too. Mostly I have been a blue jeans and sweat shirt wearing mom/grandmom with an occasional foray into the uptown working world. Lately I have found that taking care of myself does matter, even if I am trekking down to my sewing studio to play with my fabrics. It makes me feel better to know that I put a little effort into ME. My mom sold cosmetics and she taught me to do subtle highlights, always use colors that are natural to your skin/eye colors. I think adding some sparkle for the holidays is a great idea. Now I want to google my colors and cruise the makeup section at Target for something to perk me up a little. I think I will stick with the low key natural look, but could definitely use a makeover.
ReplyDeleteI am not a "girly girl" though I occasionally do like to get dressed up, throw on a pair of high heels and look pretty. I wore suits with heels for years but now that I work in a much more casual environment, I generally wear slacks and a jacket or sweater (business casual). I wear makeup every day because I know I look better with it! I do read articles about makeup trends and try new things. The only changes I make going from summer to fall is that I use a little lighter foundation and use less bronzer. I usually wear brown eye shadow and liner because I have aqua eyes and brown makes them stand out. If I am feeling a little "crazy" I like to try sample eye colors from Lancome and jazz up my eyes...but never leave the house!
ReplyDeleteI pretty much wear the same makeup year round. I don't buy expensive stuff either. I love blush, it's my favorite. I have warm coloring, so I look good in oranges, reds & pinks mostly. I love those colors, so it's good :)
ReplyDeleteI love when you post something out of left field that I have been thinking about lately! I used to be a girly girl. I enjoyed it and had fun with it once upon a time. For the last 10 years I have completely been the opposite tho. I've noticed that I don't look nearly as good as I used to lol (did I mention it's been 10 years?!) It's definitely time for a change and I'm doing it for ME! Thanks for the kick in the pants Donna! And to answer BlogHers questions, I am not up on make up trends but I used to switch to darker more lush tones in the fall. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't keep up with trends and don't use colors based on the season. Once I find a a few shades I like I don't change very often!
ReplyDeleteI was able to pare down my clothing tremendously after learning this. Amazing how many pieces you really wear once you know what you look good in. It was easy to part with all the beautiful clothes that you knew would really look better on someone else.

ReplyDeleteI'll say it...I'm a girly girl & do flow with the trends :) I'll switchup the lip glosses by season but that's about it. Love changes in clothes though with change in season. Love the fall colors browns, corals & pinks together especially! Love comfy stylish sweats & tops! Although you would never know I like clothes in the car pool lane in the mornings :)Fun post.
ReplyDeleteHi Donna, just want to say I've been following your blog for a little while now and Love it! I am a Hairstylist and Make up artist from Ca. Love your advice, also just wanted to add that if you use a primer under you eye make up it will last longer, be more vibrant, and allow you to use less expensive brands.Primer on your face is also important, it allows the make up to not settle into problem areas, and last longer as well. Also a few good synthetic brushes help, Target carries Sonia Kashuck brushes that work well. Also Sephora and Ulta carry great brushes, online Crown Brush is also a good source. Thanks for all the helpful advice :)
