31 Days / day 2 - money isn't first

When I first started blogging, it was all about sharing my home renovations.

I started Our Extreme Home Makeover Experience to document what was transpiring on my home for a great group of folks that helped me for a good year.

After the renos were complete, Funky Junk was created in order to share what strange and wonderful things lived inside my head. Junk was my game because I couldn't afford anything else. It pretty much had to be free or nothing.

Both blogs proved to be the perfect outlet for a yakker like me. :)

But I had no idea about the passion that would ultimately take over. Working with absolutely nothing and making it something turned into the driving force that furnished my home and lit my fire.

Seems I had a ways to go though.  I really had to hone a few blogging skills in order to make it all click. You know what it takes... time, photography, blogging know how, interesting projects.. and time.

But know what? I fell in love with that process too. To the point of obsession. After a lot of hard work, it all started coming together. In a nutshell, I pulled out all the stops and quickly learned how to play with tools, to build, photography, and the blog started to grow.

And here we are. Talking about money.

Most of us need funds so I'm happy to say if you're in that same boat, there are opportunities to earn income while you happily blog away. But it isn't as easy as it sounds. And sadly, not everyone will be successful at this. Especially right away.

numbers play a part...

Regardless of which route you choose to fund your blog habit, there's one thing that's important in order for most online money making methods to be effective. You need numbers. In other words, you need to take the time to grow your blog and have others find you and fully appreciate what you have to offer.

So many want to make money right away. But if you're blogging just for the money, you're going to be very disappointed with the results. Proving what you can do needs to come first.

...but it's really about passion

In order to make it online or otherwise, you'll only be happy with your choice if you're truly passionate about your given niche. And I mean to the point of not even thinking about money while you practice it.

because...

In order to make $, you need customers.

You'll only get customers if they want what you offer.

And they'll only want what you offer if you do it to the VERY BEST of your abilities.

And you'll only pull out your VERY BEST if you're totally head over heels in love with what you do.

Because in order to pull out the best that you have, you'll need to push yourself beyond limits and overcome fears you had no idea even existed.

But you won't mind. Because you're so passionate about it all, you'd do it for free anyway. :)

Love what you do, do it well, be noticed and the rest will come.

I promise.

'Nuff said. Let's get to work.

  15. "Do what you love and the money will come." Though I can't remember where I heard that quote, I've held it in my heart for years. I've spent years trying to "make money". Now, I'm finally doing what I love, for nothing. No money. Zero. Only passion and joy! I am fortunate enough to be able to do that, and I know I am blessed. So maybe, someday, with passion plus experience the money will come. That would just be a bonus to a fearless life lived embracing who God made me to be. Thank you for your insight and inspiration.

  24. I love this series, Donna. I can't wait to see what you're going to talk about tomorrow. I was thinking about you earlier today. I saw on the HGTV website that they are looking for people for the show the All American Handyman...you might not be a handyman, but you sure are one handywoman :)

  25. okay, my comment just disappeared on me. It went something along the lines of how I am looking forward to following your journey. And how sorry I was not to have met you at Fieldstone market last week, I was in the raggygirlvintage booth and I think you were one of the nice bloggers who asked to take a photo as I saw my pillows on your market post. Hopefully we'll meet soon!

  26. I am so glad that you have made this your series. I became ill a few years ago, and had to give up my job. 32. This is true, if you are only in it for the money, then you are blogging for the wrong reasons. All of need extra funds, but blogging is more than just making money.

    Very well said! :)

  34. Donna,

I have been lurking at your blog for some time, and I have to say thank you for this wonderful written documentary of your process. I have begun the journey recently myself, and this is just the push I need to just take the complete leap of faith. Keep up your inspirational work!:)

  35. Donna, tahnks so much for writing this series. It is amazing and giving me so much validation. A few people look at me like I'm nuts and think I am crazy for creating "stuff" and blogging about it. They think it is a waste of time and fruitless. But, you have reminded me that doing what makes one happy is never a waste of time, that if I follow my heart, be authentic and original others will aprreciate it, and that even if I am making pennies off of this pasion right now....WHO CARES! If it is meant to be it will happen and if not I am living what I love and expressing myself which is never a bad thing!
    Thanks for your inspiration,
    Kim
