Staging fun for the whole family!

I admit I do most of the staging in my own home.  My son will do his own take on this or that, but I tweak all my shoots to 'get the shot' if you know what I mean.

Recently we've been hit hard with Hurricane School. So we as a family have taken a slightly different approach with our staging efforts in order to cope.

 Ready to learn? Enjoy!

1. Son Baking A Cake Vignette

An encouraging activity for those tummy rumbling hungry kids fresh from school. Ensure they make something you like too so you can act out The Little Red Hen segment later as part of their literacy assignment.

2. School Explosion Vignette

A hearty pile of disheveled paperwork proudly pops against the depth of the counter tops to brighten things up. White is always versatile but a splash of strong orange is especially festive for the upcoming fall.

3. Big Honkin' Pile -a- Dishes Vignette

A must have for those that feel like no one ever cooks around here with a shiny clean empty sink. You will feel the love with this look and perhaps even be enticed to add more! It's a very addictive setting.

4. The Whole Dang Box and Bag Vignette

Don't even waste another moment with a handful of this or a little of that! Plunk the entire contents of whatever to encourage that 'just stocked up from Costco' look, even though you really got the goods from some overpriced local store.

5. Just Stocked Up! Vignette

A pile of boxes once holding vinyl sign supplies guarantees you many hours of future prepping pleasure!  The look provides a gentle reminder that you DO in fact have something to do in any free second of spare time. Good to know!

6. Back Pack Splash Vignette

This wild wave gone mad of brand new school supplies spreads faster than any tide on the beach! The supplies stay put until your little surfer is ready to hit the big school waves. Helpful to have within tripping distance so you can grab and run while late for the bus.

7. Dumping Ground Dump Vignette

No front entry would be complete without piles of anything that came from everywhere and is nowhere near where it should be. Especially festive when something you've been looking for is lost within it's ever growing depths for weeks and feels like a lottery win when found. Oh what a feeling....

 8. Under The Gun Fun Run Vignette

As luck would have it, you're so busy with school that your work area also gets a taste of the party.  So when the work phone rings, the paperwork sings! And often in midair, which adds to the bedazzling look of a busy office ready for a big adventure! Best to avoid a decent computer that can handle blogging unless a shovel for paperwork maintenance is desired. (shovel not included in this special offer)

9. The Stop Drop and Run Backpack Vignette

No kids are busy until they come home with a backpack full of homework. Then they're so busy they disappear just like *poof*. A nice accessory to have near you when you're desiring a little much needed 'me' time.

10. And 11 and 12 and all the way up to 88. Not shown due to Blogger restrictions on 'keeping it clean'. Let's hope they don't ban this post...

So... can you relate? *sob*

  1. Most definitely I can relate. There is just DH and myself and we have our share of piles that need taking care of. I also 'tweak' for photos.

  2. All I can say is at least most of it is from a young person...I have a 50+ male species who can do his own form of hurricane on a home. We spent 45 minutes looking for something he was sure I PUT AWAY SOMEPLACE - only for me to find it in his closet but under something...he would have NEVER found it! Have fun....you are not alone!!

  3. Donna we're in the same boat for certain. All those beauty shots for the blog are truly staged otherwise it wouldn't be worth it. My entire house looks like yours, a myriad of vignettes and NO ONE seems to clean/take care/ handle any of those vignettes except Mom. Moms who DIY projects and blog about them truly are the busiest people in the world.

  4. Gosh, Donna, love your vignette sense of humor--I wish I would have thought to do a post like this, and you only have one child! Thanks for the entertainment. Hugs, Kim

  5. Daily. Got house fairly ready for company last night. Dishes done, counters clean, living room with no junk, bathroom spotless etc. Got up this morning - dog had found some good mud and walked everywhere, newspapers and breakfast dishes in living room, counters messed up, bathroom towels on floor, laundry in hallway ...

Anyway, you win for best photo shoot. Loved your post.

  6. Thank you for showing that Mary Poppins is the only one who is "practically perfect in every way." :) We all love the amazing side of your creative life and you inspire us with your projects. Now, you can inspire us with reality, we aren't the only ones with "staging" issues. Blessings on the new school year!

  7. I can certainly relate. The clutter seems to happen in a blink of an eye, and the clean up seems endless and constant.

  8. i think clutter is like death and taxes ;). it just happens i try to be organized but if i'm focused on a project everything stops until i'm done. and my honey bear also has accused me of messing with his stuff/ moving /hiding ect.oh well life goes on . but i like things handy so my canisters coffee pot and toaster live on my counters [with a lot of other stuff]. also there are few children/males that know how to hang a towel so i havent had a towel bar in my house for almost 30 yrs. hooks work so much better!

  9. Glad to know you are human, too. I've told my youngest son I'm not changing his sheets until he picks up all of the hot wheels and hot wheels tracks. I'm afraid I'll break my neck. He says I'm inhibiting his creativity. He's 8!

  10. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!Love your vignettes...I have many of those right now too! You should see my loft area..GASP! We can barely walk around up here. Thanks for the smiles:)

  11. Love it! I'm so glad it's not just my home that very often looks like this.I have 2 teens and a big dog. My hose will never look like a House Beautiful home. Every night when i go to bed the kitchen is clean-when I get up, it's as if a party had gone on while I was sleeping! Dishes in the sink, dishes on the counter, wrappers of some sort laying about, etc. And then there's the laundry....
    Thanks for sharing!

  12. Yup. I can relate. And I'm here to tell ya that even when they're done school at the ages of 20 and 22 they're still messy!!! At any given time I have about 15 different large vignettes goin' on. I know how it feels!

  13. I most certainly can relate. I spend the morning picking up and when the mob of teen aged girls gets here its a whirlwind of various bags, shoes, phones, earrings, necklaces, ipods, Mom Homework, their homework, and...and...and...

    (((((hugs)))))

  14. Oh my, I sometimes think there is no way to ever get ahead of the mess. Between my stuff, hubs paperwork and cooking rampages, 20 year old college girl and friends and newly moved home college son and friends, (not to mention half the junk from his apartment I haven't found a place for) well I am glad to know we are all in this mess together. Thanks for the wonderful post!

  18. Ohhhh Donna....you have NO idea how good this makes me feel. While I love nothing more than looking at beautiful vignette's from all of my favorite blogging sites, I must admit that at times I feel a "little less than". I tend to think that you are all normal and I am so NOT normal with a dirty house and piles thrown here and there. But this post really brings it home and I can now comfortably say ahhhhhh.....we are ALL ab-normabl. :o)

  19. OMG! you just made my day. And I am having one of those days, believe you me. Besides the fact that your vignettes look very similar to mine ( minus the cute funky junk decorating, of course), I love that you use words like "whole dang" and "big honkin' "...my favorite descriptive words! You are awesome. Keep on keeping it real.

  20. It is always so refreshing to see messes like this at your house too! My house hardly ever looks like the pictures on my blog- I sometimes have to go back and look at them to help me remember just how it is supposed to look when it comes cleaning time!

    Thanks Donna!

  21. It's official.....I "heart" you beyond measure...this post is pretty much my life...for me to stage a picture is almost tortuous....I have NO space left anywhere...none...nada...I am considering using sidewalk chalk on my driveway making that my pretend house for pictures...even blacktop looks better these days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I can so relate!!! Thanks for bringing a smile to me as I sit in my very own dumping ground vignette.

  23. LOL! You are so funny. I have several of these staging areas in my house every day. We all know that keeping our homes picture perfect only lasts for a short time. Then life happens.
    Thanks for the smile.

  24. Very funny post. And glad to see you are human afterall. Don't worry, I knew you were. But it's nice to see that no one keeps a perfect household all the time. Especially when kids are involved. Even if they are grown up kids like mine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hilarious and yet, so refreshing. I'm pretty sure that most people (bloggers and nonbloggers alike) can relate and, its nice to know that we are all more alike in that way than not. Fun post.

  26. Great post and you are definitely not alone!
We have five children (two now grown and left the coop) but what back-to-school explosions we had and still have!
Over the summer we moved and I set up a beautiful "command central" using my aunt's old side board, a bar stool from a yard sale, a vintage bottle again from a yard sale with a branch of cherry blossoms (that my daughter made from a real branch and tissue paper for Mother's Day/11) and one of my paintings above...gorgeous, until about a week ago, now it looks like a paper/pen/pencil crayon/eraser/backpack monster threw up all over it lol!

  27. My house looks like that most of the time! Hahahaha!

  28. THANK YOU, THANK YOU for making me feel so special (and normal) with our similar vignettes!

  29. I've got a great "4 kids under 5 eat here" vignette going on under my kitchen table. Unfortunately I had to dismantle my own Big Honkin' Pile of Dishes vignette earlier today. I simply couldn't sacrifice every fork in the house for the sake of decorating any longer.

  30. I feel your pain girlfriend! You need to see my "How the heck are the vehicles gonna make it back in the garage by winter" vignette. My ADHD chaos exploded out of my brain and landed all over the garage... and basement... and back yard... and I'm JUST starting out in this business - yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ohhh girl I soooo can relate !! I am cracking up at all of the other vignettes too in the comments ~ I am loving it ! I feel so much better about my wayyyy ADDness !

  32. Hysterical. I thought your house looked like the earlier pictures all the time. Can you write a tutorial about how to make the big green arrows? maybe that would help around my house. I'd take pictures and arrow them and submit them to the culprits. I'll bet you staged your mess just for this post. Where were the dog toys and dirty socks and empty water bottles? Ann

  33. Today a new store moved into the retail space
next to us, they "cluttered" up the entire
sidewalk with pallets from the merchandise. As I looked through the pallets for suitable wood
for several Halloween signs I am making for my blog, I thought of yours...you would have had a hay day with all those pallets!

  34. I l-o-v-e this post! How wonderful to see that everyday life is the same for all of us. My son is a regular Taz, a tornado that leaves everything so messy that I would never dare to make a post of it!
He`s soon leaving to protect our King of Norway, joining the national guard that is....so his single mom will experience the new 40 something and go wild...with the interior of course..
That sums up my life story, why not, as I feel I kind of know you after reading most of your posts! There is just so much inspiration that comes along with following you, and your projects!
I wish you a wonderful day in my very favorite country...(I have a mulitple country disorder, changing between being norwegian and american. Unfortunately the last is just a daydream...) Hugs!

  35. Hummm...you forgot the Shoe Vignette around the back door....it really takes on a life of its own...moves around too...lol...have a great day, Donna! Oh, my friend, Joy, just gave me a cheese wheel box and a wire basket....I'm on the hunt on what to do with these new gifts...from other junker...thanks for visiting Mel's Designs from the Cabin...Mel

  36. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! Love this post! I can't believe there are only 2 of you in the house. Ah well, both of you must be terribly creative people. HAHAHAAHHA!

  37. This is sooo funny. I have the same thing except all my kids are out of the house and I have an empty nest. It's what is left over from years of raising 2 kids. I would be so embarassed to take a pic of my upstairs rooms with all the "stuff" that has taken over. Now that I have a very large home with no one living here except me...I have no excuse but to purge and clean. Goodluck to you and it's nice to see a home that is lived in!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. OK, when did you come into MY house and take all those pictures?? Well actually, your house looks better than mine, at least it's decorated cuter along with the clutter. ;^) I have a friend whose house is in perfect order no matter when you just "pop in." That just ain't right. I need at least a days notice! *snicker!*

  39. I was up at 5 am this morning, sending off boyfriend and oldest son, I think I may have found my way out of the 15 loads of laundry that were on my basement floor. The oldest son decided to clean out his closet, which I thought was a good idea at the time, thank god it's garbage day today...great post Donna, we can totally all relate to it at this time of year :)

  40. There's a reason most of my photos are macros or carefully cropped. I'm sure it has nothing to do with clutter, miscellaneous projects, slovenly housekeeping or general Life though! Nothing at all.

  41. Hi I'm new to the blog world ... I have been looking and reading for a few months only and my blog is only a few days old. I wanted to let you know I love your creativity. Keep Junkin :)

  42. You are SO not alone! Sometimes I think it's because we have too much stuff, but even with a trip to donate stuff to the salvation army almost every Saturday, my house still gets this way. Of course I blame it on everyone in the family but me. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. DONNA YOU MAKE ME LAUGH. Yes I can relate when my grandchildren sometimes come to see me and dumps their book bags on my bench and their purses and jackets on my table. They done care all they want is a snack from mawmaw's house.
And that is o.k. with me, someday soon they will be grown and gone. They grow up so fast.
Loved your post, I am still laughing. Thanks!!!
I tried to leave a comment this afternoon and it would not go through, sure hope this one does.

  47. LOL can we ever relate here!! Multiply by 3 add football equipment/practice uniforms/tennis racket/alto sax and you have our house... plus 95 lb dog who has discovered the mud again! I know this too will pass so I am trying to just enjoy each day as it comes... I love how Heaven's Walk puts it "a tribute to a fun, loving, active, and creative family!" EXACTLY! :)
