Tadaaa! Done!
Kidding. This is a real tray, and that just won't do. :) But I'm lovin' those handles, so off they came.
Go find yourself a cute little cabinet door that really still belongs on the cabinet, but.. oh well. I'm low in
Now comes a mini lesson in predrilling. See that tiny little drill?
Why predrill?
We're going to predrill some holes so the screws goes in easier. It isn't always necessary, however if you do, it makes the job easier so your screws don't go ice skating across a tough surface. You also reduce the possibility of splitting the wood. And on a prepainted piece, it's just neater. I predrill most everything I use for screws these days. Just make sure your drill is abit thinner than the screw.
First, mark where you desire the screw to land.
Nice and easy!
Like the rust on that drill bit? That's the amazing patina achieved if you leave all your tools in the rain for a week by accident. I know!!!! But the new and improved finish makes it tough for them to slip into the drill, so don't do that even though it's ultra cool looking.
All done! But first...
A quick test run by one of our two Catzilla testers. This one passed with flying colours. xo Now shoo!
Do you always think your cats look like monsters on your projects too? No? Ok, nevermind.
Remember ugly office #1? That desk got moved temporarily into ugly office #2. And here we are acraftin' before much of anything got done. This was just more fun. :) More on this office soon!
I don't know... maybe I should wait and show you what I did later with the tray... Ahhh!! So hard to keep a secret when you have a nice picture on file, ya know?
Ok, well, this isn't in it's final home so I guess it's ok. Those are just loose sheet music sheets on top that could easily be Mod Podged down.
And there you end up with a cute tray with abit more character than one ready made! And the sky's the limit. Go find yourself one amazing chippy door and some funky handles and have some fun.
But this door isn't chippy, because I'm turning over a new leaf here!
Well, just for the short while. Is this something MMS would do maybe? Hmm... :)
I love it! I have some cabinet doors in my garage...maybe I'll be making my own tomorrow. Thanks so much for sharing!

Ohhh, I want to make one of these. One of the blogs I follow uses them all over the house, they are so cool! I need to share it with you. She has pine branches and cones and crystal door knobs in the box, so cool!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea, especially with the sheet music! My great room is done in musical instruments and I have been looking for an idea for something to sit on my coffee table. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeletevery funky and definately no longer junk... ;)
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I think your DE-JUNK project turned out pretty well.
ReplyDeleteHowever-- I do have a hard time believing your going all out DE-JUNK and She's going all out FUNK... we'll see!
I know it's for the sake of US scardy-cats that can't decide on paint color...y'all are showing us by example that it's OKAY to try NEW things...
I'm watching! and loving it...from a distance.
But don't let that 'bug' get on me... I'm A decor-phobe (I think)

This is such a wonderful idea! I love how it turned out and how you accessorized it in the end! I think it was a cute idea to leave the little knob on it, too. (I am assuming that was on the cabinet door originally.) Love this! :)
ReplyDeleteNice smooth finish...sheet music...MMS is rubbing off on you! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteThe tray looks great! And LOL about not using a perfectly good ready made tray but creating your own. Gotta keep busy he.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think that last pic is def. MMS inspired but not a true copy cat yet.
MMS would definitely do this! Ha! Loving the tray!!
ReplyDeleteHugs
SueAnn
Definitely MMS inspired! She probably would have painted it antique white and sanded the edges and roughed it up a bit then glazed it, and mod podged the sheet music down. But you are sure close!
ReplyDeleteThat is very nice! I like your volunteer testing crew too! LOL! They have to check everything out.
ReplyDeleteYou make many neat things! I also liked the post about the feed sacks. I am trying to learn about the linking process for blogger. Anyhow, I have several vintage feedsacks, this gave me some ideas as to what to do with some of them. They were fun to see!
Have a great day.
Renee
I like the sheet music on the tray too. I'd like to take an old picture frame with a grandkids picture in it and make a tray out of it too. I've been lookin' and decidin' which one to use..check back with me later, I'm still working on the door desk and quilted chair...projects, projects....
ReplyDeleteI love the tray, and yes, my dog Polly tests all my projects:)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love it! I'm always looking for trays at the Salvation army and never find any! Now I can do this instead. Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cooool. Luv the sheet music & the candle. Good job. I laughed when I saw the picture of the drill bit.
ReplyDeleteI really like that tray! I think MMS would be proud. I may have to do one of these soon.
ReplyDeleteCute!!!
ReplyDeleteVery MMS. I was at a thrift store a couple of months ago that had doors for .50, rats I knew I should have swiped them up!Just think of the great trays I could have been making!Love the idea and the tray!
ReplyDeletei have two trays similar to this doing nothing. not anymore...thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh no! Everyone's gonna give me a hard time for mimicking her, but not copying her specifically?!? I need to bow out of this challenge NOW. :)
ReplyDeleteI just can't copy. It's against my principals!
True story? I can still use the door on the cabinet this way. LOL
Donna
Yep it totally looks fab like something MMI would do but looks like you too, kinda. Anyway I love it!
ReplyDeletebrilliant craft ideas!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I would have just painted the first tray and called it a day. I'm lazy that way. The question is now...what are you going to do with the handleless tray??
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I love these trays!!
ReplyDeleteThat tray is adorable, MMS THE SECOND....:)))
ReplyDeleteOh my word Donna! You had me laughing at your cat comments! I have a cat I nicknamed Catzilla! She is one of my foster cats and she kept trying to destroy my Christmas village this year! Catzilla was the first thing that popped into my head the first time I saw her walking through the village and knocking people and trees over! Then it was where is the spray bottle?!
ReplyDeleteI love your tray. I just happen to have two doors I recently removed from a cabinet in the guest bathroom which would be perfect for this project. This is easy enough that even I can do it! I even have some drill bits that look like that (thanks to one or both of my boys...)!
Thanks!
~ Tracy
Very cute and I love the sheet music. You know it. :) I can't wait to share what I've been working on...
ReplyDeleteoh now this is a spankin good idea! this one i may need to copy! :) love watching your blog
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I have about 15 of those cupboard doors, aaaad, lots of old hinges and hardware that would be cute on them too.
blessings and thanks
barbara jean
I just did exactly that for Christmas! Thanks for reminding me, I have to post about it. That will be on the agenda tonight. Check out http://shenaniganshan.blogspot.com/ tomorrow to see. I think mine are a little more MMS style too and since they were gifts I wanted to be safe. But I also really wanted to beat them up and make them nice and junky :)
ReplyDeleteVery Miss Mustard Seed!
ReplyDeleteJo
Clever idea, Donna! Very MMS, indeed! :) And painting it black made it look very chic! I have three Catzillas that insist on "quality control"! lol!

So flippin' cute! Great idea. Thanks for sharing. I just did a post on trays, and this makes it affordable for everyone!

I love the tray. I'll be on the lookout for some stray cabinet doors at yard sales. ;-) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletePatty
This is a lot of fun! I did this a couple of months back here...http://restoreinteriors.blogspot.com/2010/10/i-hope-that-this-post-finds-all-of-you.html
ReplyDeleteI think yours looks better than mine though:)
SHEET MUSIC?! Wow, this is crazy, I feel like I'm in a parallel universe! I'm so glad you salvaged those great handles. Hugs & giggles, Kim
ReplyDeleteLove the easy door-tray project. I've done the same, just using picture frames, too. Or anything I can screw some handles onto! Had a laugh at your rusty screw bit, I was thinking you needed a new one...but kept reading until you mentioned the rust. How funny!
ReplyDeleteHugs & Happy Day! ~Heidi
I love it! I need to go find some unloved doors pronto!
ReplyDeleteI love it, and yes this is something MMS would do. Maybe with a little glaze on the music sheets too.
ReplyDeleteI love the sheet music on the tray - very nice touch =) Your cat reminded me of how when I was younger, my cat would always have to lay down on my homework. I wouls shoo him away and he was back within 5 seconds. Why do they do that??
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to make a tray FOREVER! Thanks for the great idea, I think I am gonna steal it :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great, MMS or FJI. A good source for cabinet doors in my area is a Habitat Restore. They always have new cabinet doors of all sizes when I go in.
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS!!!! (and how did I miss this post???)
