My loot is currently sitting out on my patio to air out. What's with burlap's fragrance anyway? Anyone know? Is this stuff toxic or something?!?
Anyway, what would you make with these delightful little pieces? Other than stuff a couple to have ready made pillows (how cool is that?!?), I haven't come up with anything yet.
Now quick! All flood areas, scoot over to your local hardware store and see if they're in stock yet. They'll go quick when the water rises. :)
Hmmm...The look almost the perfect size for a seat cushion. That's actually where I thought you were going with it when you took the picture of them on the chair. Some foam, batting, and ribbons to tie it on...maybe a stenciled detail? Nice find. Although, I hope everyone would surrender their decor in the event of a massive flood! :)
ReplyDeleteWow ~ who knew? Besides a pillow {which was my first thought}, placemats, or to staple on canvas or frame ~ after you stamp it with some design, of course. : ) I'll bet if you had enough you could make some kind of burlap wreath with it!

ReplyDeleteWow, what a deal. The smell reall does dissappear- it just takes a little time! I love all the suggestions you have gotten so far- also, don't forget how great a christmas tree looks with burlap around the base! I love the burlap stocking idea, too- use some freeaer paper to make stencils, and just spray paint the design right on! What about matting for pictures?

ReplyDeleteIf you have skinny chair backs you could slip them over the chair backs, tie a ribbon or something around it, and tie a little pail or pumpkin on the back for your Thanksgiving Table.

My first thought was gift bags for Christmas presents. You could still stencil something on the bag and your recipient would have two gifts...the one in the bag and the bag itself, which they could then utilize for some of the before mentioned ideas.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I've never seen them in our hardware stores. I've never seen my town flood, and I've lived here my whole life. Even though I live on a Great Lake.
Put them in a bag with some cheap ground up coffee and it will get rid of a lot of the smell.
ReplyDeleteForm one loosely around a jar and tie with raffia for a rustic vase.
Soak one in a strong starch mixture and tie it around a jar just for shape. When it dries it will be a container on it's own. Or you can starch it and lay it over a bowl and make a burlap bowl.
That smell is awful isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI have a burlap "connection" from my local coffee roaster, so I get as many as I want for free. I have been working my way through various projects with them.
So far, I have made runners, covered our recycling bins that I have throughout the house, used it as ribbon, made a table round, used it as matting for photos....the list goes on and on!

ReplyDeleteI actually love the smell of burlap! Reminds me of the horse barn/corral at summer camp years ago - good memories! Hmmm, as for what I'd make...pillows, definitely...tie it up around the base of a houseplant and sort of bunch it up...make a reusable shopping bag out of them...okay, that's all I've got for now!

You could use it to make a fabric headboard or as an insert in a headboard. Why not drapes. Open them up and sew into a length of fabric. Hang with cafe clip rings from a black rod. You could even use some black ribbon to create a design.

I thought it was awesome, hope they did too :) So do some pillows, and stencil them up! I know it's been done before, but you could make them SOooo unique and cool! -tammy

For some reason, I'm visualizing this tufted -- perhaps one of those firmly quilted message boards with some diagonal dark ribbon, a few dark numbers stamped on it, and then some rusty thumb tacks. I knew if I said the word "rust" you would notice this comment (haha).

ReplyDeleteI saw larger burlap bags at a garden store - they meant to keep the winter cold from destroying your plants. The size might be more versatile for some projects! I love the idea of a sandbag or burlap party. By the may I followed your tip on the burlap garland and I got me some. My Christmas tree thanks you and so do I.

ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in a log home (up until a year ago), I used burlap for all of the window valances....with lace curtains on the bottom half of the 6 over 6 windows. I'd by it by the bolt at Joann Fabric with a 50% off coupon and run it thru my sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch to finish the edges. This year ,I used a large leftover piece for a tree skirt around a 4ft. tree that I had up on a crock..looked great!
